The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2014 The blue cap, the big one in the ’holy’ Rochefort trinity and one of the true greats in the ’massive ale’ style. Mousse-like, nicely lacing, tanned foam, stable in relation to its ABV, though it inevitably turns to ’islands’ of foam after a while, colour of the same hue as the 8 but clearly darker and equally misty; aroma even more powerful and intensely perfumed, I reckon anyone who knows this beer can recognise a bottle being opened from a few meters distance, impressions of banana liqueur, marzipan, chocolate, port wine, coriander, the ever-present Rochefort liquorice effect, peppery hops, freshly grated ginger, Flemish ’boterkoeken’, dates, pear syrup; taste begins with a full and rich fruity sweetness, lots of candi sugar, medium carbonisation, very full, almost syrupy mouthfeel, intense and profound maltiness (caramel and chocolate with a nutty touch), opulently decorated with spices (coriander, cloves, liquorice), yeasty, aftertaste with an increasing degree of alcohol warmth (rum, brandy) but never becoming astringent, peppery hoppiness, candi sweetness also lingers on and I can accept the fact that this may be a bit too cloying for many (but then there is still the 8). Wish I had the patience to keep a few in my cellar for some years as this is one of the few big Belgian ales I have not yet tasted as old beer - and I am pretty sure this will stand the test of time gloriously.

From Brugge, somewhere. Appearance is a deep dark with an off white head. Aroma is of plums, raisins and some dark chocolate. Taste is of dark fruits, a touch of chocolate with a slight bready note at the end. Very smooth and drinkable. There’s a nice bit of spiciness in the finish. Very tasty.

Complex, fruity, dark, and leathery. Sweet raisin but also dry with prickly carbonation. Full body. Some warming. Cloudy prune appearance.

@ Havregatan. Bottle (330 ml) from Systembolaget (40:-). Fruity and sweet malty, raisins and caramel, some nice alcohol notes, very complex, medium body with an oily texture. The finish is sweet and very fruity with alcohol notes.

Dark brown amber. Sudsy, quickly disappearing head. Tons of suspended black flake particulate even after handling and pouring gently. Best before 30.01.2018 Drank on July 7th 2014 Not sure what went wrong here. Beer may have turned do to bad storage conditions between brewer and me. I long awaited trying this beer with great expectations I gleaned from all the wonderful reviews. But those expectations were quickly shattered as soon as I opened the bottle. Bottle hissed nicely as cap was released but not much gas remained in the liquid and beer fell rather flat on carbonation. Sweet, syrupy, plum, brandy, low bitterness. I will have to re-rate this beer in the future. Very sad.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a deep brown, with a massive khaki head that dissipates into a disc, leaving good lacing. Nose is dark fruit, black currants, and caramel. Taste is black currants, raisins, and dark fruit, with a lot of different flavors. Gets more complex as it warms. One of the best beers I have ever had.

This is probably the best beer I have ever had. But then there is Westvlettere which is still an unknown but also a lot more expensive.

Black colour, nice perception, sweet beer, no burned malt is percibed, fruit and sweet flavour is percibed. Really nice trappiste style beer.
