carruthm (1110), Seattle, Washington, USA May 21, 2008 dark dark brown with fizzy off-white head. aroma of honey, malt, vanilla, and dark rum
taste of some alcohol, and dark fuits.
palate - nice little burn at the end of the taste from the alcohol Meatmallet (120), Salem, Illinois, USA May 20, 2008 Pours a reddish brow with a thick two finger tan head. Smell is full of spices and alcohol and sweet dark fruit. Has a sweet fruity start with some black licorice mixed in. Then it moves to a carmel malt and alcohol finish. Mouthfeel was exceptional on this beer. The head and carbonation have a lively feeling in the mouth.
ErikDM (2), USA does not count May 20, 2008 Nice one again. together with the Westvleteren the best of the trappist’s. Perfect with a good bourgond meal, like wild game diners you have in the US. mcox90 (617), Wilton, USA May 19, 2008 11.2 oz bottle. I don’t own a trappist glass so I drank it from a snifter. Pours a hazy mahogany color with a good sized tan head.
Nose was dark fruits, some sweet caramel, with a whiff of alcohol. Palate is full, but dry & heavily carbonated. Flavor was a complex mix of plums, dates, raisins, currents, some caramel sweetness, all with a mild alcohol background. As I stated when I rated the Rochefort 8, it’s good, but I don’t see what all the fuss is about. darkseduction (198), Zweibrücken, Germany May 19, 2008 Bottle 33cl. Pours a dark brown brew with a creamy stable white head. Chocolate and toffee flavors, some coffee and dry fruits. Very complex and longlasting aftertaste. Burning alcoholic finish. EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA May 18, 2008 Dark, dark carmel with tight carmel head. Light malt and carmel apple aroma. Almost some floral about it, not nuts, but the flowers of nuts, if that makes any sense. Then just a burst of flavor. Fruit and grains, hops with malt, a hint of sweetness and alcohol bite. This is what I imagine the Norske Gods drank in Vahallah. In general, this type of beer is only about my third favorite. The fact that this gets a 4.4 is pretty meaningful to me. WallyWalrus (205), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA May 17, 2008 11.2oz bottle. Pours an extremely dark brown with a firm mocha-colored head. Aroma is relatively light, with hints of caramel, coffee, malt, and dark fruit. The taste, on the other hand, is big. Huge mouthfeel and very full and dry body. Initial sweet flavors of syrupy hops, molasses, and dark fruit give way to a dry finish of brown alcohol, spices, and wood. Unlike the Bernardus 12, this one doesn’t overwhelm the palate with alcohol -- instead it’s a much more flavorful and dry, almost whisky like on the finish. One of the best and comparatively easy to find: why wouldn’t you try it? douqep (8), USA does not count May 16, 2008 Bottle. I had this once and didn’t realize what it was. Had a memory of it being too overpowering. But, tried again and found it subtle, well balanced, caramel-like. Heavy but not too heavy, creamy, would probably go well w/ a full flavored mushroom dish.
