chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 9, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a large tan head. Nice fruity aroma and some Belgian yeast. Tastes a little better as it warms. I also thought it was better then the Rochefort 8 I had earlier in the week. Hides the 11.3% amazingly well. I really am not a huge fan of this type of beer, but it is so well balanced it is hard not to enjoy. Geuzelambix (110), København, Denmark May 9, 2008 Dark, flavorfull and really a condensation of what Belgium is about. The aroma wasn’t striking when I had it (this time) - maybe because of a too chilly temperatur. The appearance was dark and filled with rests of yeast. Maybe I’m growing a little tired of deark beers, but apart from being genuinly quality it didn’t light my spark 100%. wacho (51), Izegem, Belgium May 9, 2008 geproeft in ’t Rusteel Gullegem. New York, USA May 7, 2008 Updated: Dec 26, 2008Bottle. Pours a beautiful deep brown with a large light tan head that persists. Sorta looks like sludge, but it is the prettiest beer ever. Aroma of light fruits, raisin, Belgian yeast. Flavor of some smoked meat (first time have gotten that from Rochefort), Belgian yeast, dark fruits, chocolate, some booziness but it works for this beer. Very well balanced. Mouthfeel is extremely rich and hearty. My favorite beer and my first 5. 10/5/10/5/20
Update 12/26/08. Aroma of dark fruits (apple, pear) and raisins. Flavor of sweet fruits especially apple. Quite boozy in the finish. I do enjoy this beer but I think I rated it especially high because it was the first good beer I really loved. Always a pleasure though. I think the 8 is better however, this beer can certainly vary from bottle to bottle. Unfortunately, I have to lower this rating. MrChopin (620), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 7, 2008 Updated: Jul 15, 2009I’ve had numerous bottle over the last few years, and I am becoming increasingly certain this isn’t among the best. While still good, the nose is too lactic and the flavor too dry and malty. Not as sweet as others, the carbonation and body weight are overkill for a beer without enough complexity. I don’t get the love.
Opaque tan-brown body (more red than the 8) with large white head. Smells of fruit berries and roasty malts like the 8. The roasts seem deeper. Taste of strong malt with some fruit sweetness, seemingly more balance and a stronger roast aftertaste than the 8. Similar to the 8 but with fewer champagne qualities, a dryer finish, far more balance (especially as it warms) and generally more going on. mjs (1445), Helsinki, Finland May 5, 2008 (Bottle at Hilpeä Hauki on 2008-02-15) Dark brown colour with hints of red. Fruity sweet nose with malts in it. Fruity well balanced taste with sweetness from malts. Dark chocolate. Some bitterness. Long malty aftertaste. Absolutely marvellous beer. lemasney (398), Trenton, New Jersey, USA May 3, 2008 ABV: 11.3 %

Impression:Deep, dark rich, inpenetrable visually. Glorious, deep rich aroma, chocolate, greens, grains, and nuts. Very enjoyable. Rich, but not overpowering. Deep, but not murky or quicksand. A deep and full flavor signature of herbs, chocolate, sweets, malts, and spices. An absolutely satisfying beer.

Overall: 18 out of 20 - A wonderful, deep, and highly enriched beer. durhambeer (1186), Durham, USA May 3, 2008 Celebrated my #200 with this one. Beautiful dark brown pour with generous and perpetual off-white bubbly head. This caught me off guard. Had a Lost Abbey Last Judgment last night and had a sticky sweet Abt/Quad on my mind. This hit me as overwhelming soapy and perfumy at first... but then... it started working for me, big time. Great creamy fruits, yeast, chocolate, spice, vinous notes, perfume (jasmine?). Even a surprising amount of hops present. Hides the 11.3% like a champ. Livlely and delicate on the palate... refreshing, even. Great balance on this beer. This was a pleasure.
