DKTN (110), Mc Donald, Tennessee, USA Apr 15, 2008 Bottle, 12 oz. Murky and cloudy dark ruby with a lasting light brown head. Good lacing. Heavy malt aroma with molasses, caramel, and bread. Only light hops, but heavy on the yeast. Initially an average alcohol aroma, but grew as the temperature of the beer rose. Notes of plums and dates, as well as cask wood and nutmeg. A full body on the palate with a creamy texture and lively carbonation, and a somewhat bitter finish. The flavor lasts long with a moderate combination of sweetness, bitterness, and acidity.
Overall I get the impression that I have yet to fully interpret and understand this beer. This was an "off-the-shelf" vintage (probably 2007). I would love to try vintages of five year intervals to see how it matures. SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Apr 14, 2008 Pours a cloudy dark brown with hints of amber and a wonderful long lasting creamy tan head that leaves lots of great lacing. Sweet aroma of dark ripe fruit and yeast, some caramel and spice, chiocolate and raisins. Great flavors coming through too, roasted malt, fruit, chocolate and spice. Nice alcohol bite. Seriously wonderful. Imperial-John (154), Mississauga, Ontario, Canada Apr 12, 2008 Cloudy reddish brown with a bubbly tan thin head. Fruitcake yeast aroma like many of the Belgians. The perfect winter Belgian fruitcake, vanilla, toffee taste that warms you as you drink. Not too sweet, not too dry, the blend is perfect. The after-taste is perfect. Smoother than the 8 with more alcohol, what a combo. Vas19 (293), Maryland, USA Apr 12, 2008 [Rating #100] 10/24/12 bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, wine, yeast, and some dark fruit. Flavor is also extremely complex: roasted malt, dark fruit, alcohol, a bit of nut. A lot going on, but I dont like it quite as much as I was hoping. plovmand (1590), Helsinge, Denmark Apr 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark brown with some esters amd a nice brown head. Yeast nad dark fruits in aroma. Flavour is dark fruits, roasted malts, yeast, caramel, chocolate and some brown sugar. surmont (11), USA Apr 11, 2008 Rich but overrated beer. Smoothy beer. Special caramel taste. Sweet but rich! DocHop (278), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Apr 10, 2008 Updated: Apr 19, 2008Rating #100: Pours a dark, hazy brown/rust with a tall, thick tan head. Wonderful aroma of plums, raisons, alcohol/wine. Extraordinarily smooth body. The initial taste is that sweet plum kind of sugary/chocolatey taste, with a very wine-like finish that’s a little dry. Man this is delicious... koentje67 (8), Belgium does not count Apr 10, 2008 Great beer this is. Very dark brown, high in alcohol, but not overpowering. Taste of chocolate, ripe bananas, figs, ... Good creamy head, long finish.
