A distinctly raisiny flavor with a bit of bubbly zest. Not so subtle tinge of carmelized sugars, singed almost. Lots of underlying subtleties...plum, perhaps a hint of cherry, several types of maltiness... Finish goes on. That said, I have trouble liking this. It is certainly good, but perhaps a bit too raisiny for me. patricks110 (279), Alberta, Canada
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 25, 2009 At 11.3%, I expected this to be a harsh beer, but the alcohol is hidden quite well by the intensely complex flavors. The pour is a dark brown almost purplish black tone with a bountiful tan head. Aroma of fruits and earthy maltiness. Taste is unbelievable- smooth and malty with undertones i cannot distinguish. A slight alcoholic aftertaste. Very smooth for a high ABV beer. Overall, probably the best of one of the best beers I have ever had the privilige of tasting. cliffybaby (2), Blainville, Quebec, Canada does not count | 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Sep 23, 2009 This beer surely lives up to its reputation. I’ve waited a long time to try this beer and all I can saw is WOW! Please refer to the other ratings, I am just speechless. This is better when sipped slowly at room temperature in a nice tulip glass. EvilKingWilson (11), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA
| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Sep 23, 2009 best beer i have ever had in my life, hands down. tons of flavors attack my taste buds all at once. i can definitely taste the plum, chocolate, raisin, caramel, coffee, and alcohol. there are at least 10 more flavors in this beer to enjoy as well. ivan9856 (129), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 23, 2009 The 330 ml bottle pours quickly with its long thin neck, leaving a sizable tan head. The large head dissipated quickly, leaving a short layer of small durable bubbles and a fair amount of lacing. The body of the beer is quite dark, but reveals a rich copper hue when held to light. The nose is complex. Earthy and musty aromas mix with caramel and molasses notes. There is also a strong alcohol component. Palate entry is dry and lively, but there is a strong malt backbone giving the beer a medium to full body. Mid-palate and finish reveal expected dried fruit flavors: raisin, prune and date; but, there also is a hint of clove. The high alcohol content ྫ.2%) is very well-balanced and adds to the enjoyment of this of this Trappist ale. Bonster (84), Jersey Shore, New Jersey, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 23, 2009 Updated: Nov 2, 2009Bottle shared with friends. Pours a muddy brown with a creamy and fluffy head. Dark aroma of mixed fruits, chocolate, and malt. Many flavors jump out at me and it seems the character changes with each sip. The sweetness and alcohol are apparent but I think they balance well. A good amount of sediment settled in the glass. I was really looking forward to trying this one and it definitely did not disappoint! wkalle (113), Sweden

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2009 Bottle. Poured rather fizzy with a lot of carbonation and a lot of head. Dark brown in color with lots of sediment and flakes floating around. Smell was bold fruitiness with a noticeable alcohol presence. Taste was dark fruits, plums, malts, and a little bit of butterscotch taste as it warmed up. A little hard to drink at first due to all the carbonation, wasn’t very pleasant at first until it settled down. Noticeable alcohol heat when drinking. Overall pretty good though.
