The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities.

Reviewed 9-9-10. Sometimes it’s tough to review a legendary beer after you have not had it in awhile. Questions like: Tastes change over time, and what if I don’t like it? are very commonplace - at least in my mind. Anyway, I picked this up over at the Arlington Whole Foods today because...it was there. I poured this into a sniffer. Ap: Dark brown, muddy water pour, that adds up to this beautiful fully cabonated (almost champagne-like), dark brew that has the foamiest head I’ve seen in a long time - unfiltered obviously. Ar: VERY subdued, but equally pleasant. I was expecting this big flood of dark fruit to start beating me up (like Raison d’Etre), but much to my amazement - no. Sure, I’m getting the fruit, but I smell chocolate. T: Sweet licorice right off the bat, then dates. VERY sweet. I actually think age will mellow this out. Not many fancy spices at all - just good old fashioned malts and sugars. Earthy and then some! P: Creamy as hell, with the intense sweetness being part of the brew’s charm. Lots of foamy lacing on the glass. O: 11.2 fl. oz. was plenty. Because the stuff has an ABV of 11.3, I’m feeling pretty good!

From a 33cl bottle purchased at Les Fleurs du Malt in Lyon (Thanks Cyril!)A very dark hazy orange/brown with a beige head. Remarkable aromas of plum, blackcurrant and raisins. Incredibly rich and complex with a mouthfeel that makes every taste bud come alive. Very long finish with tastes of fruit, caramel and dark chocolate. A truly great rich-tasting beer with great balance, harmony and complexity.

Un nez très léger avec une odeur de fruits des bois, de caramel. Un palet extraordinaire avec une fin très prometteuse : une vraie bière noire avec une très belle couleur .

COlore rosso scuro, marrone, molta schiuma. Odore frutta matura, fichi secchi, alcool, caramello, leggero vinoso. Sapore fruttato, caramellato, leggero tostato, dolce ma tagliato bene dall’amaro finale. Frizzantezza medio-alta, alcool ben nascosto ma molto corposa.

Bottle (expiry date - X 2020). Aroma: from the bottle:dark cholcolate, alcohol, quite roasty too. Appearance: black, cloudy (almost pure black colour) with minimal head. Taste: heavy bodied with heavy bitterness, dark belgian chocolate and fresh roasted coffee beans, alcohol is present as well. Reminds me a bit of belgian chocolates with strong acohol (kind of liquor) filling. Actually sweetness is less than medium. Full bodied. oily, with medium carbonation and longg coffee-bitter finish. The best beer I’ve drank so far, I guess. I’m tippytoing more and more towards belgian styles. I like them.

Hazy dark brown with red and ruby tones. Nice big head caused by carbonation I think. Great lacing.. Aroma: pharmacy, cloves, cinammon, resin and herbs/flowers. Taste: toffi, cloves, christmas gingerbread herbs, a bit of good quality mead and alcolic aftertaste with low bitterness and sweet gingerbread tones. Oily and quie full body. High carbonation. In mouth sense: It creates some kind of spicy alcolic aftertaste combined with hint of milk chocolate. Very intersting beer, quite nice for long winter evenings, it causes really nice heating feeling

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a dark brown with a huge, latte colored soapy head that dissipates then leaves a nice film throughout. Lots of dark fruit on the nose: plum, raisin, prune along with sorghum, bread pudding, star anise, clove and nutmeg. Taste is fairly similar with lots of combinations of the flavors above standing out at different times. Hides the ABV fairly well, but still has some slight booziness. Finish is dry with that classic Belgian yeast characteristic. Very solid, but I prefer the Rochefort 8 all day.

Dark hazy brown. Raisins, prunes, brown sugar, overripe banana Sweetish, but surprisingly dry for the abv. Very full body. Chocolatey. This is a little too intense for me, but very very good.
