Pours a dark oxidized blood brown. Yellow beige head. Thin dense bubbles. Big damn aroma. A rich paste of fruits and darkness. Candy. Earthy. Mead-like aromas. Flavor is rich sweet candy. Molasses, caramel. Alka Seltzer. Deceptively strong. The sweet mouthfeel does not disclose the gastro-intestinal burn that follows. So very thick. Ouch, this hurts! Make it stop! No wait, keep it coming. shrubber85 (3019), Wallhalben, Germany

Dark brown color with moderate head - pours like a soda. Sweet plum flavor followed quickly by a strong tannic and alcohol finish. Interesting but not a daily beer. Pinball (3013), Allerød, Denmark
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 24, 2008 aroma dominated by nutty and dark fruity flavors. nice. hazy very very dark brown, bordering black. rather large light-brown head. flavor is very interesting. it didn’t taste like it was strong, but i could feel the alc. at once in the body. alc. unbeliveably well hidden.. taste is balanced so well i have a hard time figuring what this great taste is composed of. palate a little bit watery, overall an impressive brew, not the best i ever tasted but VERY good, even for a belgian. presario (3010), Calgary, Alberta, Canada

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | May 21, 2002 Smallish head with medium condition. Initial aroma impression is of stilton cheese followed by a figgy fruitiness with hints of licorice and creosote. Body is very chocolaty with a port like woodiness and yeasty bread flavours. The alcohol only realy becomes apparent in the aftertaste which is sweet and powdery and leaves a sense of dissapointment that youve just finished your last bottle. Damn. larsga (3000), Oslo, Norway
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 21, 2006 Medium beige coarse head over dark brown body that’s seemingly opaque black, but through which a little light brown can be spotted at the edges. Intense, sweet licorice and anise aroma with notes of chocolate and bready yeast and a touch of vanilla. Taste is deep, intense spiciness, mostly anise and licorice, but also pepper, cinnamon, chocolate, and some burntness, and god alone knows what else. Toffee, sweetness. The aftertaste is bitter chocolate anise, with lingering anise. What can I say? This is an undying classic. (0.33l bottle.) BMan1113VR (2981), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 9, 2008 I am a little bit disapponted by this one. Pours with a large, ultra creamy, beige head covering a murky brown body. Thick lacing and good retention; this is what a beer should look like. Aroma is floral with rich fruits, currants and sweetness, but the aroma isn’t very strong. Alcohol is noticable in the taste, aftertaste is salty and yeasty. ante (2977), Stockholm, Sweden

Smooth tatse of dried plums, banana, apples, pepper and yeast. Alcohol gives a warming feeling with a slightly oily palate which reminds me of tequila. Finishes with some licorice bitterness and sweetness. Grreat!!!!!!
