Great fruity aroma (stone fruits) with some malt and raisins. Sweet complex malt flavors that have some fruit - cherry/plum - and a bit of an earthiness to it. Dry finish. Just a touch too much carbonation, but not more than most Belgians and it doesn’t have as much of Belgian tang. Hides the alcohol well. Nice lace on the glass all the way to the end. I wish I could have another one. JK (2968), Richfield, Minnesota, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 17, 2005 Aged 8 months, best by May 2008. Consumed to celebrate 1/2 way through lawschool. This is an excellent beer with complexity that is rarely matched. The aroma is dried fruit, soy sauce, and alcohol. It smells like an imperial stout. Very dark brown with small pieces of sediment sitting on the bottom of the glass. There is a very thin heading sitting evenly on the top of the beer. Very complex flavor. Medium-sweet malt, then followed by chalk. Next comes more dried fruit, light apple, and dry merlot. Dry after taste with more chalk and light fruit. Very heavy palate. An excellent beer in every way, but the huge price means this will remain a very rare treat. beerbuzzmontreal (2945), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Warm, sweet and inviting aroma of liquorice and alcohol, maybe spices too. Great flavor of liquorice and spices with alcohol vapors. Thick, round body with a warm mouthfeel. Very deep and complex, that’s one of my favorite beers in the world. Dogbrick (2924), Columbus, Ohio, USA

Like a liquid Fig Newton. Sweet, almost candy aroma. This is a beer to sit back, relax, and enjoy. skortila (2915), Bunnik, Netherlands

Rerate june 2004. Malty, full aroma with loads of fruit. Cloudy, dark brown coloured with a perfect lacing. Taste is very full, well balanced and complex. Full of fruits (grapes, red fruits) raisins, quite malty and sweet. Some spices present. Overall a great beer with a perfect finish. Everytime I drink this one, it's great. 5000 (2900), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 19, 2004 Bottle pours a dark brown, hints of burgundy, nice frothy tannish head, small yeastie bits, with fairly decent lacing. Aroma is wonderful, sweet, somewhat vinous, earthy, with some dark pitted fruit thrown in. Flavor comes across as quite earthy, notes of candy sugar and plums. Medium body and mouthfeel. Finishes just as it starts, earthy with candy sugar and maybe some hints of dark pitted fruit. Not bad, but was thinking this one was going to be a bit more complex. Still worth a try tho!   I still prefer St. Bernardus Abt 12.

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Aug 25, 2006 Bottle, best before June 2011, so bottled in June 2006. Almost a baby, in other words. Needed a safe bet after the Riebedebie experience-surprised that I have not rated this one before. Almost black with a big creamy offwhite lacing head. Fruity aroma with lots of pear. Starting with fruity flavours, especially pear, well-balanced, ending is marked by chocolate, toffee, some roast as well as bready yeastiness. Underlying sweetness is matched by harmonious hoppiness. Soft,full-bodied but not sirupy. This heavyweight, while great as young, becomes irrestible as after some years in the cellar. Rune (2863), Tromsø, Norway
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 30, 2006 330ml bottle. Deep mahogany body topped with an off-white, creamy head - most of it diminishing, but you can always stir it up in the galss. Aroma of dark fruit and mushrooms. Complex flavours of dark chocolate, roasted grain, black coffee and chesnuts. Long lasting aniseed in the finish. Full bodied. The alcohol is very well integrated in the brew. A very good beer, but a bit too sweet for my taste.
