This beer, the oldest of the three Rochefort Trappist beers, has the reddish colour of autumn leaves, a soft body and an earthy, herbal palate (a hint of Darjeeling tea), which develops into a deep fruitiness.

bottle at bateaud e nuit, qc. cloudy light amber-red tint with a small light beige head, decent retention and classic. classic rochefort malt and yeast in aroma. caramel, spices, licorice, anisseed, herbal grassiness, pepper, fruitiness - some toasted malts. nice mouthfeel - nice lively and soft carbonation, light to medium body, earthiness, nice grassy-citrusy short but fairly present long finish. classic but nothing spectacular here.

33cl bottle@home in Trappist glass@approx 8 degrees C. Pours slightly hazy orange with a large slightly off white head with medium retention ending in a layer of tiny bubbles. Aroma of malt and caramel malt with a certain earthiness. Taste again malty with apricot, caramel and unfortunately also a little metallic twang which thankfully disappears quickly. Effervescent but somewhat watery mouthfeel Alcohol well balanced and only warming in the slightly bitter, earthy aftertaste. The aftertaste is perhaps the best in this beer which was a little disappointing, considering that the Rochefort 10 is number rwo on my all time list. Not bad, but does not hold comparison with its stronger siblings.

Appearance: mostly clear medium amber with one finger of fluffy ivory head demising gradually to a thin cap, no lacing. (3/5) Aroma: moderately strong sweet caramel, dried fruit, light perfume, little to no hop character. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter. (9/10) Palate: medium body, lively/prickly carbonation, semi-dry medium duration gently warming finish. (4/5) An excellent example of the style. Sweet caramel malt dominates, with just a little bitterness that doesn’t linger into the finish. The finish is semi-dry despite the sweetness on the front end. The lively carbonation seems to help prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying, and lifts the body. The moderately high ABV is very well-behaved, becoming apparent only as a gentle warming. (16/20)

12/11/2006 Bottle at home. Another excellent Rochefort, although the weakest of the three, but that’s not saying a lot. Caramelized, complex flavour. Rocket-fire head. Fruit middle and solid finish. Excellent and smooth.

I got this in a 6-pack, "6 Top Trappister", from the Swedish distributor Galatea.
The beer in this is: Trappistes Rochefort 6 ABV:7,5%, Trappistes Rochefort 8 ABV:9,2%, Trappistes Rochefort 10 ABV:11,3%, Westmalle Dubbe ABV:7%, Achel Blond ABV:8%, La Trappe Tripel ABV:8% So I do have som great beers to try!

Ok - Back to the review: It pours with a three finger huge, fluffy head that refuses to leave the glass. The beige lacing just stays on the glass
forever. The beer is hazy and light brown, almoust copper colored.

Nose: Caramel malt, brown sugar, vanilla, yeast, nut, fudge, dried fruit and biscuit.
Taste: Very malt, sweet taste. Nuts, honey, vanilla, caramel Belgian yeast bread and brown sugar. This is so great!
Body: Full body. Sweet, complex texture. Medium to high carbonation.

This is such a great dubbel! If you haven’t tried it yet you just have to!

Starts out sweet and fruity (dried fruits?), then some nodes of caramel and hops take over.

Een bijzonder bier. Lichtbruin, lichter dan zijn grote broers. Subtiele Rochefortsmaak, met een duidelijke zoete toon. Karamel, hop, drop.
