Nate (2238), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 28, 2004 Sweet, malty, and light fruity aroma. Brown/candy sugar, bit yeasty. Alcohol, dessert wine, some vanilla. A light bitterness. Coppery amber clear with thin off-white lacing head. Very fine bubbles. Sediment pour makes cloudy, obviously. Medium watery body with heavy but enjoyable carbonation - like Champagne, fizzle on the tongue. Perhaps this bottle was a bit old (bought it in Brussels) but I found the taste to have no depth whatsoever. It's not that it had any off flavors. It was clean, starting with just a bit of sweetness but little malts that the aroma foretold. Hops were present, but only to serve as a drying agent. No kick, no overt sugary or vinuous character. Decent bitterness at the finish and an OK dry after. But it left me feeling that I'd not really drunk a Trappist beer. I'll have to find another bottle sometime and re-rate. For now, I'll just have to stay a bit disappointed.
Schultsc (407), Henderson, Nevada, USA Sep 3, 2008 Light chestnut with golden highlights and a thin, off-white head. Odd, though not unpleasant Tequila-like edge (strange, yes, but it’s there in this bottle) with some nutty malt characteristics and a touch of alcohol. Interesting fermentation characteristics in the flavor that seems to impart a salty tang over a light, nutty malt profile. The body is very light, thin, and almost watery--though not negatively so--the 7.5% alcohol is hardly noticible which is quite a disappearing act. This beer is not really my thing but remains quite interesting nonetheless. Straling (16), Amstenrade, Netherlands Sep 1, 2008 Bottle 33cl.
Poured at 13 degrees Celsius.
Aged 2 years.
Pours a light clear brown/red colour.
Beautiful head, good size and lasts.
Smells gives away loads of fruits, varying from strawberrys to lemon.
Very mouthfilling beer, good taste, can find all the fruits that are in the smell again.
Also this beer is balanced excellent, tastes like the 8 and 10 Rochefort, but just a little less flavour to it.
Though I must say that I can taste the alcohol more than in the other 2. mattmc1973 (112), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Aug 31, 2008 33cl bottle, pours apple cider brown, with dissipating off-white head. Aroma of apple, pear, flowers, caramel, and malt. Taste is fruity and malty, with minimal hops. Creamy mouthfeel. Not quite Rochefort 8 or 10, but a very good beer. BeerBunker (45), Burbank, Illinois, USA Aug 30, 2008 Pours fecal brown with minimal head. Smells strongly of assorted fruits and malts. Very sweet taste, well balanced with good carbonation. Delicious lingering yeast and malts. Very easy to drink, but could use more of an alcohol punch. pj1855 (45), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Aug 27, 2008 Pours a cloudy brown color with virtually no head. Very pleasant sweet aroma. Tastes of caramel and fruit. Slighty bitter finish.
