This beer, the oldest of the three Rochefort Trappist beers, has the reddish colour of autumn leaves, a soft body and an earthy, herbal palate (a hint of Darjeeling tea), which develops into a deep fruitiness.

The date code stamped on the label stated L 21 02 12 08:23. I understand that indicates an expiration date of 2012, meaning a bottling date of February 2007. Poured into a large wine glass, the beer is a russet-orange color with a thick beige head. The head drops to a thin layer with moderate lacing. The aroma is muted with notes of caramel, spice and dark fruit. The flavor profile is on the mild side as well. Some dark cherries and bready yeast can be picked out, but there’s no particular flavor that stands out. There is a bit of alcohol warmth noted that’s more than I expected from the 7.5% ABV. The mouthfeel is smooth with a cider-like tang. The Rochefort 6 was an easy to drink beer that presents a very subtle aroma and flavor profile.

Appearance with dark amber color, cloudy liquid and good foaming. Aroma of caramel and brown sugar. Taste sweet and roasted malt, with noticeable alcohol. It is a good dubbel!

The lightest of the Rocheforts represents some 10% of production and is therefore the least known representative of its range. Tanned, yellowish, stable head and misty wine-red colour, clearly more pale than its two bigger brothers; aroma of caramel with a nutty and somewhat woody touch, some grassy hops, liquorice, apple, plums, banana, wheat, coriander, brown bread, fondant; taste much lighter than the 8 or (certainly) the 10, malty, vaguely sweetish, banana, bread, lots of liquorice, lingering on the tongue, aftertaste mildly hoppy with a hint of warming alcohol. To my opinion, one of the lesser Belgian trappists, but an essential ’link’ in the Rochefort trinity.

Aroma is medium to heavy malty, with notes of bread; softly hoppy; medium yeasty, with notes of dough and basement aromas; well-balanced. Taste is medium sweet, softly bitter. Bottle. Hazy brown pour with unstable white head. Aroma is fresh with citrus. Taste is again fresh with some slightly bitter notes. Cannot sense the relative high ABV. Quite high carbonation
