COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The lower gravity cousin to Rochefort 10. Nicknamed "Spéciale" (’The Special’), this beer is the most recent production. The Rochefort 8 has a more tawny colour and a more pronounced aroma, with an even richer fruitiness (a slight undertone of fig?) and a little more spiced dryness, like that of a cake, which gives a balanced finish to the final notes.

33 cl bottle from Club de Cervezas, young specimen with best before date June 2019. Pours a beautiful hazy dark orange/tawny color with a massive off-white head with medium retention that leaves a film. Sugary notes and fruity esters dominate a massive malty/yeasty aroma. Heavy-hitting scent of caramel, Christmas cake, beet, molassess, ripe plums, dry figs, raisins, clove and nutmeg. Really great and intense, comparable to the Rochefort 10 and, just like it, even intimidating aroma, suggesting an onslaught of flavors. The promise falls slightly short. The taste is intense and powerful, but undermined a tiny bit by excessive dryness and a lighter than expected mouthfeel. Classic Belgian tartness dominates, it’s much less sweeter than the 10. Nutty flavors arise after a while, providing another dimension of flavor. I sense a fizzy carbonation and a mouthfeel that’s too dry to feel this chewy Belgian bomb I was expecting. I like it a lot anyway. The finish and the aftertaste are a little bit dull. Even though I am slightly dissapointed, I can sense traces of grateness in-between the Champagne-like fizziness and dry character. This one is unripe. I will store another specimen and drink it near the "expiration" date. It’s really good, but, as is, I would take a Chimay Bleue or a La Trappe Quadrupel anytime over this one.

After reading some of these reviews my bottle may have been a bad one. Head dissipated quickly, little to no aroma. The taste was very mild, like a thick caramel lager, not much hint of the alcohol but none of the fruit and spice I was expecting. Disappointing but will try again to compare.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2015 Dark brown with a hint of red. Big off white head with good retention. Aroma of dark fruit, roasted malt and toffee. Sweet taste with round malty body and a nice warm bite from the alcohol. Fantastic beer, however the 10 is even better imo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown with a tiny bit of red, persistent head. Smells like plastic, soap, wood, chocolate, and fig. Just off-Dry, mild bitterness and astringency, mild sourness, medium-full body. Tastes like chocolate, fig, plastic, wood, vanilla, and cream. Finish is sourish, long, and complex. Remarkably well-hidden alcohol. Delicious. So powerful and complex, but so drinkable. Amazing how well the body, alcohol, and sweetness are kept in check.

Pours a copper clear color with a thin white head that disappears really quick. Aromas of candied fruits plums, raisins, caramel. Similar taste, sweet and fruity, very balanced. Plums and raisins at first with a caramel note followed by bread and toffee. Medium body with medium carbonation. Very smooth and really nice.

A nice Belgian overall. Pours a great deep red with a tan head. Smells of cherries and strawberries. Taste is very fruity, with Belgian yeast, lots of cherries, as well as some strawberry, and a hint of vanilla and caramel. Had in the bottle.

Cloudy brown with amber edges. Huge beige head with high retention. Hazelnut aroma with notes of malt and pepper. Some alcoholic breeze. Not excessively sweet for the style, with some bittet - that's what I like in this beer. Medium to full body.

Bottle from Spar supermarket, Rochefort, Belgium. This is a very dark brown, hazy beer that pours with a huge rocky head of white foam. It has a very rich plum, currant, burnt toffee and spicy star anise flavour, a luxurious warming mouthfeel followed by boozy sherry, oak and vanilla on the finish. One of the best beers I have ever tasted!
