The lower gravity cousin to Rochefort 10. Nicknamed "Spťciale" (íThe Specialí), this beer is the most recent production. The Rochefort 8 has a more tawny colour and a more pronounced aroma, with an even richer fruitiness (a slight undertone of fig?) and a little more spiced dryness, like that of a cake, which gives a balanced finish to the final notes.

The head was pretty foamy no matter how I tried to pour it, but died down fast. Itís pretty sweet, malty, and despite the high alcohol there is no harshness to this at all, you could drink the stuff all day. It didnít have any crazy weird funky flavors like other Belgian ales. I think pretty much anyone would enjoy this beer. I picked it up because itís near the top on every beer rating list Iíve ever seen, and it didnít disappoint.

Bottle from the LCBO. Murky dark reddish brown body under a huge off white head that hangs around for a while. Leaves lots of spotty lace. Nose has lots of dark fruit, molasses, ginger, light cloves and pepper. Medium sweet fruit and toffee with a light bitterness and a slight red grape tartness with a pervasive balanced spiciness. Medium almost creamy mouth with a fine prickly carbonation and a long complex fruity finish. Great multi-faceted ale.

Bottle from Masuyoís. Poured into a snifter. Pours a clear ruby tinged orange brown with a nice soapy two finger head that dissipates fairly quickly. Big aromas of fig, prune, and peach on the nose. Sweet on the palate but not overly cloying by any means. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. As it warms up the alcohol shows just a bit, but for 9.2% it hides it all fairly well. Soft carbonation with a really nice warming finish. World class strong ale!

Pour two and half fingers of head on a hazy dark brown body. The aroma candy, caramel and dark fruits. Nice. The taste is perfect. Balanced fruit sweetness, a touch of brown sugar, some other stuff, amazing. The texture is light and fizzy. Outstanding.

Nose: Sweet, alcohol. Taste: Mainly raisins, nuts, caramel and roasted malts in the background. A bit port-ish. Full bodied, medium to full carbo. Nice!

Cloudy brown-amber with creamy fizzy beige head. Smells is malt, spice, fruit (fig, peach, apple), mineral. Taste is even more sweet and spicy but not cloying. Some cloves and grassiness. Almost salty finish. Palate is frothy but fine. High booziness (9.2%) well balanced. Lots of things going on in this beer without getting too big - a refined and complex example of a strong Belgian ale.

Nice typical strong ale aroma with tiny sour notes from the glass. Clear, copper color. Super pleasant taste. Alcohol perfectly covered. Itís big and really good beer.

Bottle 330 ml, pours slightly cloudy hazel nut brown with ivory colored stable head. Aroma of nuts, raisins, dried fruits, barnyard, leather and earth. Low sweetness that switches fast earthy tartness with some bitter notes. In the finish there is again some light sweetness. Nice, but a little bit to tart for me. I prefer Rochefort 10.

Poured from 33cl bottle at Sarpsborg Vinmonopolet in Norway. Slightly red coloured beer with a head that disappears quickly when poured. Nice aroma and fruity taste. Very pleasant to drink.
