I let this one warm up a bit before pouring. Pours a cloudy brown with a nice fluffy lingering tan head. Nice dark fruity sweet aroma. Flavor is caramel, dark fruit, but surprisingly malty-bitter. Feels good on the tongue, but expected a lot more in the flavor department. That expectation probably impacted the score as well.

11.2oz served in an Orval Chalice. A - Pours a dark reddish brown with an active off-white head. S - Bready malts, alcohol soaked dates, very spicy, sweet malts, dark candy sugar. T - Spicy fruit upfront, dried dates and red figs, nutty, deep caramel malts, dark candy sugar, alcohol seems to stimulate the tongue with a tingling sensation. The finish is dry, earthy, and woody. M - Aggressive carbonation creates a very airy feel, after the beer sits the carbonation mellows out and becomes more creamy but it’s still on the thin side. Not your typical Dubbel here. Lots of earthy mysterious flavors in this one. Drinks way better with the yeast sediment poured in. The thin component threw me off a bit. Serving type: bottle 10-07-2012

330mL Bottle 9.25%. Have had this once before, but revisited as I lost tasting notes from my beer market trips in Toronto. Dark brown pour with a bubbly tan head, decent retention.heavy on carbonation Aroma is quite fruity. Full bodied. Creamy, buttery mouthfeel. Taste is ripe blueberry, black currant, raisin, toffee, spiciness. Extremely smooth finish and a lingering taste of sweet malt. Superb.

Pours a hazy, dark caramel colour with thin, cream head that quickly thins. Smells slightly of ripe fruit and spice. Taste is of spice, with alcohol undertones. Had a slightly thicker texture but with good carbonation. A complex beer for sure. Great beer!

Philym (19) - St Neots, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - JUN 17, 2013
Appearance: Chestnut brown/red. Initial billowing ivory head which quickly reduced down to a thin bubble layer. Aroma: Fruit cake, vinous, banana, bubblegum, hint of pepper, citric tang and plaster. Taste: Medium sweetness, low bitterness, slight maltyness and alcohol. Palate: Light body, smooth texture, slightly prickly carbonation, a quick finish but lingering alcohol warmth on tongue. Comments: Wonderful beer. Served in snifter and left a lace.

The head was pretty foamy no matter how I tried to pour it, but died down fast. It’s pretty sweet, malty, and despite the high alcohol there is no harshness to this at all, you could drink the stuff all day. It didn’t have any crazy weird funky flavors like other Belgian ales. I think pretty much anyone would enjoy this beer. I picked it up because it’s near the top on every beer rating list I’ve ever seen, and it didn’t disappoint.

Rating: 3/5 = World Class: Deep red color liquid, perhaps brown. Head is 2.5 fingers with a light pour straight down the middle. Super tight bubbles Gorgeous lacing and alcohol legs. Head is between a strawberry blonde and a light brown. Tons of fig characters as well as plum/prune and malt on the nose initially. Also notes of dark brown sugar. Moderate alcohol also on the nose, but nicely complemented by the other aromas. Instantly hit with a creaminess sensation on the first sip with some carbonation which quickly dissipates revealing a a wonderful characteristic of fig, malt, and turbinado sugar. Mid sip contains notes of plum and a nice warming which lingers into the finish and lasts nicely before the next sip where the carbonation cleanses the palate. Finish continues with tastes of dark fruit with a sensation of port wine barrel. Wouldja - Yes

Aroma: Port, vanilla, milky coffee, leather, raisins and yeast.

Appearance: Dark brown body. Massive beige head with a light brown patch where the sediment from the bottle of the bottle was poured. Superb lacing.

Taste: Fig, coffee and milk chocolate. Sweet but with a slightly bitter, spicy finish.

Palate: Full body with a foamy mouthfeel. Light carbonation.

Overall: Unsurprisingly, this smells and tastes like light’ version of the Rochefort 10 (’light’ being a mere 9.2% ABV). A fantastic beer... but not quite as great as its bigger brother.

This is beautiful. Unique, balanced, complex, and yet somehow completely easy on the senses. The aroma is wonderful, very natural and appealing. The head is VERY foamy and disappears in seconds, I quite like that. What you get on the taste is an unmatched combination of dried, dark fruits, yeast and a mildly sour tinge on the finish. It’s remarkably uncomplicated and yet perfectly balanced and brewed - there’s nothing quite like this, except 10 of course, but I prefer 8.
