COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The lower gravity cousin to Rochefort 10. Nicknamed "Spťciale" (íThe Specialí), this beer is the most recent production. The Rochefort 8 has a more tawny colour and a more pronounced aroma, with an even richer fruitiness (a slight undertone of fig?) and a little more spiced dryness, like that of a cake, which gives a balanced finish to the final notes.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours dirty brown with a frith head that settles to a thin vail over the surface. Itís not a looker, more like dirty laundry water. The aroma is of burnt sugars and some nougat. The taste is predominantly sweet, brown sugar, mint, nice. Not much hoppy bitterness to divert the sweetness, but itís not really needed. The yeast of Rochefort is part of the spectre too. The bubblyness of the beer fills up mouth giving it a more full mouthfeel than it really has and as the bubbles fade away you can feel a more thin beer. It is lovely, though. Excellent.

330 ml bottle from the LCBO.

Appearance: Pours a hazy light brown with over a finger of tan head. Shorter retention and very little lacing.

Aroma: Biscuit and bready malts.

Flavours: Belgian yeast, dark malts, prunes, walnuts, brown sugar and hints of milk chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Average viscosity and higher carbonation.

Overall: This is a nice Belgian ale but no where near as enjoyable as the Rochfort 10 in my opinion. Lots going on in the aromas and flavours but I donít get the subtle nuances that I got with Rochfort 10.

Bottle at the Green Bud in Atsugi, Japan. Nice balance between malt and Belgian trippel alcohol aftertaste. Fruit blend of raspberry and malt. Tasty! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: mostly clear deep amber with two growing fingers of fluffy light tan head, excellent retention and minimal lacing. (4/5) Aroma: mild, dark fruit, brown sugar, chocolate, bread, honey, spices. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter. (10/10) Palate: medium-full body, lively carbonation, semi-dry medium duration gently warming finish. (4/5) Not as light and easy-drinking as the 6, not as complex and interesting as the 10. Donít get me wrong - still a pretty darned good beer, but Iím not sure Iíd bother with this particular one again, seeing how it kind of bridges the gap between its two brethren. (17/20)

Poured into a tulip glass. The copper body produces a large head with a moderate thickness that dissipates to about an inch high after a few minutes. The beer is very carbonated and yet gentle on the tongue with a short finish. A fruity aroma is coupled with a sour/semisweet flavour.

Deep, overwhelming taste of bread, amazing smell and a sweet, lovely aftertaste. This is an amazing example of trappist belgian beer.

33cl bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours dark reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is raisins, prunes, caramel, nutty, yeast and belgian candi sugar. Flavour is medium sweet. Medium bodied, a little lively carbonation. Finish is dark dried fruits and a hint of alcohol. I like the big brother much better.

Pours dark brown with a beautiful, thick, lasting off-white head. Fair amount of sediment in the glass. Aroma of chocolate, yeast, a tad of alcohol, loads of malts and dried fruits, raisins, plums, spices as well... Complex indeed, and almost amazing. Didnít like the alcoholic smell though. Despite being not that strong, it kind of bugs me a bit. Tastewise, Iíve got nothing to complain. Beautiful soft, almost creamy-like taste of nuts, chocolate, dark fruits, great yeasty notes, spices, some sweet-breaded notes, cloves, liquorice. Nice smooth bitterness towards the end, soft sweet and spicy in the aftertaste. Truly beautiful. Beautiful creamy texture, full bodied... Smoother than its stronger brother and therefore, the 8 is just one up on the 10. True silk in the glass. Its smoothness accompanied with itís great complexity and wonderful balance, makes this brew a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Perfection at its finest.
