willblake (1932), Long Branch, New Jersey, USA Nov 24, 2004 11.24.04 33cl bottle before work, why not? Bottle dated 01.12.04 which I guess means ’drink by Dec 1, 04’? Whatever. Pours a beautiful mahoganey brown with medium, creamy head. I left the big chunks in the bottle this time, but I have four more bottles to experiment with later. Aroma is chewy and vinous, port wine, raisin and rum, infused dark fruits. Damn, this beer is all fruit and booze...I think I’m in love. Flavor is big and chocolatey and raisiny and deeply port-ish and luscious and more cocoa powder and hits of white pepper. At the instant of the sip, the body feels unfortunately wet, watery almost, with a graininess to the texture; but that all goes away as the beer settles and smooths out over the palate. Certainly not as soft as a quad, but still very nice, more refreshing. Alcohol is certianly present but never over steps its bounds. Monks rule.
cluny6 (65), Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England Aug 30, 2008 Dark, cloudy brown with lost of yeast sediment. Small head that perdures. Aromas of dark fruit and roasted sweet malt that lingers. Notes of dark fruit with slight alcohol aftertaste. As good as it’s father. A+ evanrail (19), Prague, Czech Republic Aug 30, 2008 On draft at A La Mort Subite and from the bottle purchased at Cheesy in Prague. (Damn that’s a stupid name.) On draft, obvious sediment; from the bottle the first half-glass pours a clear dark amber with a Persian carpet of lightest beige on top. The nose has notes of stewed oranges, wine reduction, but also something bready pulled straight out of the walk-in. In the mouth, candied fruits dusted in cocoa. My notebook from the tasting at Mort Subite reads: "Dark choc.-scented alc.; inhale, exhale x2 — still tasting the fruit (peach, orange, coconut — am I just thinking fruit salad & Grandma?) Sediment in the bottom of the goblet." I wanted to say I like this better than Rochefort 10, but then again I’m an idiot. It’s still pretty good though. Straling (16), Amstenrade, Netherlands Aug 30, 2008 Bottle 33cl.
Pours a dark clear brown colour with a good size head, that lasts.
Very complex smell that I can’t specifically put my finger on, noneless it’s brilliant.
Flavour also very nice, can pick out raisins, pineapple and pear, but I tasted the beer too cold so I could be mistaking here.
Goes down great, no trace of the alcohol, definitly one of my favorites!
pj1855 (45), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Aug 29, 2008 Pours a murky brown color with a foamy tan head. Aroma of fruits and malt. Tastes of fruit, spice, malt with a bit of alcohol in the finish. Borresteijn (542), Amstelveen, Netherlands Aug 28, 2008 Had this beer many times, this stuff just keeps amazing me. Pours very deep dark brown, like dark chocolate, with a creamy beige head. Aroma is imo the only "flaw", it could have been stronger. Subtle aroma of dark fruits, mostly malts and dark chocolate, some alcohol. Flavour is soft, malts, lots of dark chocolate, some dark fruits and a bit of alcohol. The beauty of this beer is that you don’t have to work your way through a load of sugary sweetness like with so many other dark strong ales. Soft and creamy mouthfeel, nice lingering finish, full bodied.
