2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: MAR 6, 2015 Can: Rustic amber color, 50% opacity with a dingy, off-white head. Fluffy, slow to recede, leaving lots of lacing behind. Aroma is potent. Pine, citrus rind, grapefruit, very ashy, peppery, spicy. Hint of toasted biscuit malt. A bit of dish soap pungency in the aroma, too. Flavor isn’t as bitter as expected from the aroma. Big bready & toasted malt base. Lightly sweet with maybe even a hint of caramel. Leafy, spicy, ashy hops with notes of white pepper, grapefruit, orange zest, & mild earthiness. Drinks more like a slightly old American Pale Ale. Heavier body, semi-wet finish.

Pours a clear caramel, little carbonation and a fizzy light head. Basic malt aroma. Decent hops flavor on the front, bit a bitter follow-through and end. Some astringent and overt alcohol flavorings. Sticky mouthfeel and sweet aftertaste.

"i don’t know what "assertively balanced" means, but this ipa needs a touch more hops to fot the bill. the aroma is almost all malt, the flavor/finish a touch bitter at the end. maybe a balanced pale ale, but not enough for an IPA."

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
16 ounce can into pint glass, best before 12/6/2014. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, light pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, citrus rind, pine, light caramel, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice IPA. All around god complexity and balance of citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

16oz can (retrieved from 08/2013 Midwest jpg backlog, bought in Traverse City/MI). Tasted like an industrial UK IPA, heavy on rougher caramel-tinged orange marmelade, invaded by a more unsubtle registry of conifer resins. Bit of abv, else clean but no fireworks.
