4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sample thanks to motortoddhead. Dark brown/black. Pleasant aroma of fresh citrus and pine hops with light cocoa/roast malt background. Flavor is moderate pine and citrus bitterness with a caramel, faint roast finish. Some residual roast and sweet pine. Mildly sticky mouthfeel. This black IPA is a success, as the roast aspects do not muddle the hops’ presence in the aroma or flavor.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a foamy beige head. Nose starts off with a blast of piney hops then continues with a nice bouquet of roast, earthy, malt notes. Palate is full, with a rich texture of carbonation, stickiness, and bitterness in the finish. Flavors of earthy dark malt notes, sticky resin hop notes, light raisins.

Taste is sweet resin/pineapple hops with some bite, cocoa/chocolate/roasty-dark malt. Taste is more complex than the nose. Ok carbonation. As it warms, some licorice too.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2012-01-06. Very dark brown-black body, nice foamy tan head. 4+ Interesting aroma, alcohol, weird fruit character, sort of chocolate touches. Flavour is similar with odd fruit meets cocoa and light roast. 6+ Average plus bodied palate. Okay, the flavour combinations do not always work well together for my tastes. 4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Gift from boss! Who doesn’t remember giving it to me. Must have been bottled at least a year ago. 22oz brown glass crown cap. Served well chilled in a tulip. Very dark brown with red hints. Fluffy, very light brown clay-colored head. Barnyard brownies, menthol, mild coffee, and dried fruits and grass waft forth challengingly. Only first sip shows booze. Wonderful earthy creamy texture. Flavors of coffee-cookie, mild basilly thing is very cool, a little Spanish brandy and toffee. Very good hoppy dark ale blurs the line between strong porter and IPA. Great with tangy feta, tomato, fresh thyme, black pepper, olive oil salad. Also the best looking label of any Rock Art beer I’ve seen.
