corby112 (267), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 9, 2008 Pours a clear amber color with thin head. Aroma of malts, hops and alcohol but all less prominent than in your average barley wine. Flavor again is similar to a barleywine yet much weaker. Niot a strong alcohol presence with more of a malty taste.
probstk (685), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Oct 4, 2008 12 fl oz bottle via Lubiere, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear, deep copper with remnants of a tan head.
Aroma: Caramel, peppery pine hops, toffee, sweet, some darker malts – burnt sugar and rye bread crust, some fruitiness.
Palate: Medium+ body, moderate effervescence, fairly smooth and full.
Flav.: Like the nose – the spicy pine hop character takes the lead with restrained malts behind that, definitely some caramel, raisins and dark rye bread crust, a touch metallic(?); fairly dry with a hint of bitterness and a bit of left-over dark bread crust.
Pretty light – I’d be inclined to call it a brown ale or a weak IPA. Boutip (1810), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Sep 4, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of sweet with loads of overcooked vegetables. Taste is also dominated by some overcooked vegetables with some oversweet malt. Body is really thin with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I thought there was way too many brewing flaws in this beer. mcox90 (358), Wilton, New Hampshire, USA Aug 24, 2008 12 oz bottle . Pours a deep amber color with a small off white head. Aroma is slightly fruity, along some malt scents. Palate is smooth and sweet, but not as warm and heavy as you would expect from a barleywine. Same with the flavor. It’s an ok brew, just not as heavy and complex as you might expect. Flavor is malt, some dark fruits, and some sweet sugars with a hint of alcohol. In fairness to this brew, I had already consumed a Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot before drinking this brew, so it seems pale in comparison. sstackho (249), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 22, 2008 Single 12oz bottle, consumed in August 08, purchased back in April 08 - I think it was from Charles Street Liquors in Boston. They are known to have some pretty old stock sometimes, and this one is difficult to place. The side label has a notch beside March, but no year listed. So with that out of the way, what do we have here. We have a very dark brown pour with little head. Pretty nice aroma - a little sweet, and I’m oddly getting some coffee notes. First taste follows the nose - and it’s pretty good. A bit of sweetness, but certainly not too sweet as I find some barleywines. And there’s certainly a lot of roasty coffee flavours here. I’m no barleywine expert, but I wasn’t expecting that from the style. This is more along the lines of a stout, in my opinion. Which is just fine for me, since there are a lot of barleywines that are not to my liking. Not what I was expecting, but pretty good.
blankboy (2616), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 17, 2008 Bottle (12oz) shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a slightly hazy amber-brown with an average size diminishing off-white head. Slightly weird aroma: There’s an odd spice along with cocoa, caramel, roasted malt, fruit and grassy hops -- smells totally off-style to me. Flavour: Hmmm, that’s not very Barley Wine-ish: Malt, coffee and flat cola with a roasty bitter finish. A little too carbonated for the style as well. I guess if you totally disregard what style it’s supposed to be then it’s O.K., otherwise it’s a failure.
