Nose is toasty malts, light nuttiness, cocoa, caramel, and thinned chocolate. Taste is caramel, cocoa, lighter chocolate notes and sweet malts. Faded hops as well. Body is medium and chewy in spots. Finishes with more cocoa, caramel and soft chocolate. Again this helped my meal a bit. SledgeJr (3005), Omaha, Nebraska, USA

At first there’s no aroma, but after the beer warms, you can detect a slight caramel toffee scent. Malty and chocolatey flavor Caramel notes as well. I think this was being offered as a cask-conditioned ale at the time- it seemed rather smooth and mildly carbonated. bb (2976), Martinez, California, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Dec 4, 2002 Very yummy. Dark brown ale with a lighter body that belies its true nature. Rather malty, yet mild enough to drink as a session ale. One of RBottom’s best ales. Think Newcastle and you’re not far off. Nuffield (2749), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Apr 8, 2003 Soft, broadly malty, mildly creamy. Another mild brown, but attractive for what flavors it produces. Slight sour hit. (on tap, Rock Bottom, downtown Chicago, IL) DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 29, 2004 (Draft: Rock Bottom in Campbell, CA) Sweet, toasty, malty and minimally bitter, this brown ale is a departure from the standard American style brown; The flavor remains consistent from start to finish; Sweet, malty nose is lightly chocolaty; Deep brown color with a slightly ruddy tone; Light tan head has very good retention and leaves a fair amount of lacing Aurelius (2663), Tallahassee, Florida, USA

Had I closed my eyes, there was nothing about this that would have made me think Brown Ale. It was clean drinking, fiarly hoppy, but there weren't the loveable fruit and nuts qualities there that I really enjoy in alts and English browns.
