The must try beer of winter! This Belgian strong pale ale was brewed with super aromatic yeast, spicy rye malt and enough Pacific Northwest hops to make your teeth hurt! Inspired by and brewed with local Belgian beer expect Jeff Sparrow and entered into the World Beer Cup in April!

Orange and amber swirls under a splotchy white head broken up by bubbles large and small. A thick collar leaves lacey trails upon some playful swirling which, in turn, relinquishes a nose ripe with rye delights. Looking at my tasting notes, “god, I love rye in beer” is my first written thought upon smelling his nose. Rye spice and sweet malt tease and delight while in the background a fruit bowl is overflowing with freshly sliced peaches, apricots, and pears. Weaving in and out of each aroma is spice typical to rye; peppery, crunchy, and just a wee bit ticklish to the senses. Caramelized sugars create a subtle undercurrent of maple and caramel crunchies upon which I would gladly dip my feet. Instead, I dip my lips and tongue for a sweet, bready first quaff. Caramel and maple coat my lips while my mouth fills with liquid rye bread. Immediately, pepper, spice, and whole rye seeds crunch and spark little firecrackers of flavor across my tastebuds. A heavy sweetness holds his finish firmly in place with even richer notes of chewy caramel and maple nougats. Unlike his nose, a dry presence of rye breads, grains, and whole seeds are a solid stage upon which his palate performs. Furthering our quaffing adventure, my palate continues to dry to an extreme that is turning out to be rather uncomfortable. I’m not sure whether to attribute it to the rye or the Belgian aspect of the beer, but the dryness is slowly but surely overwhelming his palate. A few more quaffs and my taster is emptied of his Belgian Rye P.A. contents, and I am left with mixed feelings of satisfaction and disappointment.

From beginning to about two-thirds of the way through, he was a shining star of Belgian strong ale and hoppy rye delights, but for the last third of his performance, things fell apart. If the finish could be tweaked to correct the abrasive and eventually overwhelming hard dryness, this would be an easy no-holds-barred winner in my book of rye love. But for now, he still has some work to do.

A golden IPA with a thin white head. A light fruity aroma of light floral hops and Brett. In mouth, a thin IPA with grassy hops, some funk from the Brett, a bit of epsom salts, not bad. On tap at Rockfest April 25 2010.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a nice golden soft lightly cloudy golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is spicy with a nice yeasty presence behind the resiny hop character. Very sweet flavors, earthy, fruity before picking up the hops that push it back into the ipa realm. Finishes with a moderate bitterness that lingers along with the spice. Medium body and a moderate fizzy carbonation. Decent stuff

Sampled on tap at RockFest (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice golden haze, a nice thick bright white head dies to a sturdy film, laces ok. Aromas are fruity Belgian yeast and lively citrusy hops, florals, pine, malty pale malts, faint rye. Initial is pretty well hopped, pear and lemon, grapefruit, pale malts and a zesty belgian spice. Honey, lemon, vanilla. Nice. Good bitterness, mellow malt sweetness. Tasty.

Draft at RB - Chicago. Poured clear golden color with an average fizzy white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Moderate fruity, yeast and toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium earthy rye sweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met with a solid beer.

[2503-20090926] Tap. Little sweaty orange rind citrus hops aroma with horse grains. Slightly hazy, pale amber orange body with a long-lasting creamy white head. More orange rind citrus hops in the flavour with mild resin. Medium body is a little bitter. Very drinkable, good.

2009-09-26. Amber body, off white head and lace. Lovely aroma, floral/leafy hop blend, something interesting that I can not place but I like, light fruit touches. 7+ Flavour is similarly fruity, illegible with tart touches of apricot/citrus fruit, modest bitterness throughout. 7+ Smooth average palate. Different, I really enjoyed this one. On tap at Rock Bottom Chicago
