COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s back! St. Nick may be done for the season but Blitzen is just getting started. This high alcohol Belgian style is brewed with amber candy sugar, orange peel, loads of malt and special Belgian yeast to create a complex, exciting and wonderfully aromatic brew.

served in a huge, thick, glass goblet and at just the right cool temp. described by the bartender as a 12% belgian strong ale. and this is delicious. my friend noted that it reminds him of a tamed The Beast. in an odd sense i thought of it as a heavily doctored wheat because of some banana and spiciness. it’s also sweet and full (i didn’t think this was thin at all) but not cloying and chewy, cremey palate, and just filled with alcohol. this stuff got me silly.

(06.08.06) On tap at Rockbottom Chicago, Chicago, IL. Poured hazy golden yellow with small white head. No discernable carbonation. Fruity spicy aroma. Medium-to-full bodied ale that starts with moderate malt sweetness with spicy (clove)/fruity (orange peel). Smooth in the mouth. Rich tasting. Finished with light malt fade. A excellent Belgian style strong ale.

Head Brewer Pete Crowley kindly let me sample this delicious treat that he cooked up in his experimental kitchen recently. It's immense yeastiness and flavor have resulted in a dangerous situation: you can't taste the 10% alcohol at all! Otherwise, this is essentially just like a Belgian Strong Ale except that I feel the richness and yeast aromas are superior. All in all, an excellent effort!

Amber body with a thin, persistent head. Strong, fruity aroma of orange, pineapple, mango, caramel, moist biscuits, alcohol and a bit of hop character. A moderate body which quickly come and then gone. Fruity flavors dominate early in the profile before being joined by strong spice and a bit of hops. Pleasant enough flavors with perhaps a bit too much hops for my liking. A pretty good Belgian, all told.

Chicago. Translucent pale yellow-gold in color with a solid, thin, icy white splotch that covers the head. Aroma digresses with pears, bananas, cloves, linen sheets, golden sweet corn juice and lemons still in the skin, begging to be opened but patient being holed-up. Flavor spins a wonderful 180. Potato bread with fresh flour spatterings cake the mouth. Buttery yeast phenols team with coriander and buttered-rum pudding. Maybe it’d be cloying in my early craft beer days, but this baby’s Stille Nacht nature is basking in glory. Oily, thick, chewy, blanketed palate. Spicy dimension, yet everything’s in harmony, finishing with sweet potatoes, clover, coriander and fresh baguettes. Damn, this brewery is at the head of the class.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2005 Draught, 2005 version: clear brown amber, thin (though retentive) white head. Grainy, malt aroma with a nice alcohol effervescence that blends and swirls inside my nose with the soft yeast component. Interesting caramel-nut flavour with a lingering sweetness of Belgian candy sugar, not quite as good as last year’s…7/4/7/3/15
Draught, 2004 version: orange golden body below a patchy, small bubbled head. Orange zest aroma with a good bit of limes, pineapple and other strong citrus notes. Body was a bit thin, with only light carbonation. Moist fruit throughout with a hoppy bitterness that hides much of the strong alcohol. Light peppery finish, nice…8/4/8/3/16

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2005 A striking looking drink in its goblet, golden orange with a lofty, creamy head. The aroma is quite sweet, very fruity - orange, banana, cherry - with spices and alcohol. The fruits are there in the taste, along with cloves and a peppery spiciness. And alcohol. This finishes on a sticky, swweet alcoholic note. A friendly, warming Belgian strong ale.

Some wheat in the nose; smells like an American or Belgian strong. No visible carbonation. Excellent lace. Good Belgian Strong. Sweet with high alcohol profile. I really like this brew, but am guessing it wont score overly well in style percentile.

Served as a sticky, copper-bodied brew with a thin, tan film. Banana shows in aroma and flavor with an obviously high ABV. This one is sticky and warming with a ton of fruity yeasts and esters. Definitely a "slow sipper".

Draft in a goblet at RB Chicago. Poured a medium dull golden/orange with not much more than a film of beige head. Nose was quite sweet, with bananas, light fruits, and some clove spiciness. Rather seductive flavor profile, just barely keeping the sweetness shy of cloying level... bananas and other light fruits on top, with a little bubblegum and a solid alcohol presence. Medium-bodied, leaving a lot of residual sweetness and cloves at the finish. Very nice brew that really packed a punch.
