Sampled at Delilah’s Vintage Ale Fest. Almost pitch black with little head. Wood, Bourbon, and vast amounts of vanilla all come through this thick and oily brew. Finishes with a warm Bourbon kick.

FoBAB: black with huge beige head. Initial aroma is full of sweet milk chocolate and the faintest whiskey, some woody vanilla in the background. Flavor is all chocolate up front, with a more pronounced vanilla and wood character, and only the faintest hint of whiskey detectable. Buttery-oily mouthfeel. One of the few bourbon/whiskey brews I could drink frequently.

Like straight whiskey, this beer was more liquor flavored than the shot of bourbon I did earlier. The appearance was espresso, and the aroma was a mix of corn syrup and coffee with a vague afterbite of swimming pool locker room.

Served viscuous and oily, black with brown highlights, tan above in a slim ring. This smelled like a shot rather than a beer! Southern Comfort/whisky with chocolate and coffee notes. Insanely potent with an untamed malted whisky sweetness that coddles rather than cloys. Ouch. Wooden notes in the flavor. There’s a pub-song about this one waiting to happen.

Deep black stout with a thin moka head. Soy sauce chocolate in aroma, with vanilla again. Smooth in mouth, with sweet chocolate, cold coffee , vanilla and restrained hops, light alcohol warmth. Smooth and warming. On tap at RB, Nov. 12, 2005.

On Tap at the Brewery. Wow, this is a beast for sure. Black with a thin to nonexistant head. The nose is strong in bourbon same goes for the taste. But there is some subtleness here and there in the back. The nose definately has some vanilla with roasted malts. The taste has chocolate, more vanilla, oak and grains. Very good. Very interesting.

UPDATED: DEC 17, 2005 First at 3rd Annual FoBAB, updated with a snifter at the brewpub. Big, beautiful, black pour with an initial deep mocha head... dropped to a light ring rather quickly. Mahogany highlights around the edges. Intense, very deep roasted chocolate, cherries, sweet bourbon, and dark fruit provided a magnificent nose. Chewy dark chocolates, roasted Columbian coffee, espresso, exceptionally well-integrated bourbon, and light tobacco were brilliantly matched for the flavor. Brilliant mouthfeel! Rich, roasty, and full... slick yet thoroughly coating of the palate. Long, roasty bourbon chocolate finish. This was phenominal!

UPDATED: APR 16, 2007 Festival of Barrel Aged Beers. Perhaps my favorite of the day. An impressive amount of dark chocolate meets bourbon. Picks up the vanilla, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon notes from the bourbon. Some dried fruit, but mostly chocolate and roasted coffee flavors. Rock Bottom in Chicago is amazing. RERATE: On tap downtown. More bourbony than previously, and a bit less refined. Score lowering from 4.4 to 4.1

On tap: Great balanced aroma of huge chocolate and moderate bourbon. Dark brown with an insignificant tan head. Lots of chocolate from start to finish. Light vanilla in the background. Big bourbon fades leaving a roasted coffee finish.

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2005 Re-Rate- On Tap @ the brewpub- Pours a pitch black color, no head. Aroma is bourbon, toffee, cherry, butter, lots of bourbon. Flavor is strong whiskey chocolate, smooth body, oily, sweet, chocolate dominates. Perfectly balanced and drinkable. HUGELY impressed! GABF- Pours a pitch black color, nice sized brown head. Aroma is butterscotch, whiskey and chocolate. Flavor is bourbon chocolate, very smooth.
