COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Named in honor of those crazy yet brave folks who jump out of airplanes into a forest fire, this malty, robust and slightly hoppy porter was brewed with 60% beechwood smoked barley creating wonderous smokey flavors and aromas that marry with the cocoa and coffee flavors of the English Chocolate malt.

Tap @ RB Chicago (from notes 5/23/09). Pours dark brown with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has a nice smoked character, roasted malt with a hint of cocoa. The flavor is smoked malts, roasted malt, cocoa, and a strange fruit note. Medium plus body. This one was decent.

On tap in Chicago. Pours black with a brown head. Light on the smoke in the aroma and big on barley -- bummer. Tastes of balanced notes of each, though, with added notes of baker’s cocoa and cream. Highly drinkable.

On tap at Rock Bottom Chicago. Poured deep brown with a well-retained cap of yellowy-beige head. The aroma found smoky accents over well-roasted dark chocolate, molasses, and black patent malts.. a bit phenolic on the back. The flavor found rich, roasted darker chocolate supporting liquefied campfire smoke.. touches of earth and coffee bitterness surrounded.. warm on the back. Creamy, rolling carbonation across the palate with a nice, dry, bitter complement.. the smoke worked quite well in this one.

A deep dark porter with a thin moka head. A rather strange, cheesy aroma, with burned wood, and phenolics. In mouth, a rich and smooth porter, with light smokey notes, oily mouthfeel. A rich and smooth porter. On tap at brewpub, May 17 2009.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2011 very good brew, smokiness is subtle and as such adds complexity to the chocolate and slight coffee flavour of the porter. my favourite of the night

dark dark brown, tiny tan bubbles for a head, nice lace. nose of coffee and roasty malt. flavor is very roasty, smoky, with notes of coffee, chocolate and some hoppy bitterness. medium bodied, lightly bitter finish. very enjoyable, a touch too heavy to be sessionable. on tap @ RBC brewpub.

At brewpub. Pours an opaque extra dark brown with a small beige froth. Full aroma, creamy, coats the nostrils, smoked beachwood. Really strong flavor, full of coffee and roast, some beachwood, then dark chocolate, a little bit fruity, coffee beachwood aftertaste. The fruitiness is kind of off-putting. Ashy tobacco bitter coffee aftertaste. Creamy full mouthful, medium body with full carbonation. Really nice roasty qualities but has some oddities.

Rockfest II, Rock Bottom Chicago: This poured an opaque mahogany body with a modest tan head. The aroma was a woody smokiness with a dark roasted sweetness and a dash of earthy, floral hops. The flavor was ruled by the smoke, but bitter chocolate and roasted malt were evident. As was a hoppy bitterness that seemed to clash with the smokey flavors... which is probably why most smoked beers are lightly hopped. Pretty decent stuff regardless.
