3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap @ Oak Park beer festival. It has been a long time since I have been into Rock Bottom Chicago and I used to live there. Pours gold with a white head. Nice smokey aroma and flavor, yet very balance, light, and easy to drink. My friends liked it and they had never had a smoked beer before. Well done.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draft at RB. Pours a light clear glowing golden with a small creamy white head. Aroma is nicely smokey a bit meaty, earthy with a bit of light fruit and a soft doughy character. Flavor starts sweet and nicely smokey with a touch of meatiness and a bit of crisp fruitiness. The sweetness continues with some honey and sweet breadiness into a sharp and quick finish of some smoke and a touch of bitterness. Medium body and a softer carbonation. Good and refreshing, though not nearly rich or complex enough to match the real German rauchbiers,

I’m a sucker for smoked foods and this is no exception. Had this on tap in downtown Chi-town at the Rock Bottom brewery while watching 4 different football games and chomping on some red pepper hummus. Awesome aroma with the smokiness taking center stage early and not letting go. Mouthfeel is soft and malty with a long tart smoky finish. I could not think of a better combination. Blew away the smoked helles from Shlenkerla.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at the brewpub. Clear dark gold with a thick, lasting white head. The nose is moderately smokey and sweet, a little beachy and tree bark as well the flavor is initially smokey but not overwhelmingly so after a third of the pint. Smooth smokey and sweet bread with a crisp honey quality. Lightly snappy noble hops are an afterthought but provide a nice balance. Medium bodied and pretty easy to put down. Pretty good but I could see a nicer malt flavor.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at RBC. Pours a pale gold with lasting white head. Nose is distinct beechwood smoke with some sweet pils notes in the backgrown and a touch of phenolics. On taste, the fermentation isn’t perfect, there seems to be a bit of a phenolic issue independent of the smoke causing some astringency. Has a nice smoke character that fades in the finish and towards the bottom of the glass. Still, pretty nice to see some traditional lagers being done here. Decent.

Sampled at the RB: Warrenville Pop Malt Liquor Event (Warrenville, IL). Poura a bit darker golden hue, a touch of amber, well hazed, moderate creamy white head. Aromas are nice crisp bread dough, crackers, pale biscuits, and a light smoky meat character, cherry wood. Initial is similar, well balanced with bread, smoke, and a nice floral grassy hop feel. My summer lager of choice, a tasty brew with firm seemingly cherrywood smoked malt flavor, campfire meats and wood very nice
