4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUN 21, 2004 Re-sampled, June 21. Just had it again because it was still on tap after the first day of summer. It's holding up very well, and now I get a nice nose of American hops, too. Still very enjoyable!
Tap, at RB's Sub Zero Barleywine party. Releases a nice malty smell in the taster, with a trace of foam still clinging. Sips like a syrup, with a pleasant note of fruitiness, oranges mostly. After the 3rd or 4th taster I get a few licorice notes, too. No harsh alcohol as with some "young" barley wines. Only problem is it's in a category where there are some awesome brews, so it suffers only in comparison.

I had this very enjoyable beer last year at the Barrel Aged Beer Festival where it won best of show. To my surprise it showed up at the GABF this year! Copper body with a nice head and lacing. Nose of citrus, caramel, brown sugar and pine. Full bodied with a great flavor that balances hop, malt, wood, and whisky very well. Great beer.

Vintage unknown but I’m guessing 2004. Was definitely NOT the bourbon barrel version. Has a rich nose of vanilla and plums, exceptionally smooth and soothing... tart smelling and having a noticeable aged quality but not a distracting aspect, that’s for sure. Mellow is a word that kept coming to me. Perhaps it had some light red wine scents... very good nose. Appropriately thick - syrupy and sweet like medicine. Plums, maple, brown sugar, and what I like - not overpoweing with hops. A very nice counterpart to the more common hop monster barley wines.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 6, 2005 A good, thick, warming drink. It poured a clear copper color with a thin yet foamy head. Hopped-up aroma with a strong alcohol presence, also smells of lighter fruits. Chunky mouthfeel. Plenty of sweet malty tastes, alcohol warmth, fruits, and hop bitterness. A not unpleasant sticky, sour finish.

Clear copper body with a nice, tight layer of white foam resting gently on top. Big, hoppy aroma full of orange, grapefruit, lime, strawberries, pineapple, caramel, toffee and omnipresent pine resin. A full, rounded mouthfeel is pleasant on the tongue and allows the flavors to travel well. As was noted before, despite being young in age, the flavors don’t show insane harshness. The flavors have really coalesced to produce a enjoyable, yet strong (11%) Barleywine. A pleasant surprise to find available.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught: dark translucent red-orange body with a wonderful creamy off-tan head that persists throughout. Piney citrus aroma, with a good bit of sap. Thick, sticky, resiny mouthfeel. Large amounts of alcohol and a sugary bitterness. A nice after dinner treat.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Hazy reddish copper color with a medium sized off white head and nice lacing on my snifter. Citrus hop aroma. Medicinal taste backed by pine and resiny hops, but there was a nice malt balance to this.
