Draft. The latest to fall under the "Terminal Stout" tap is actually a porter. Acquits itself pretty well in this category, with a nice dark roast malt feel, and a combination nothwestern and English hop profile. This doesn’t knock me off my feet like other porters have, but it still makes for a nice session beer. I was bringing a friend to his first brewpub sampler, and he did enjoy it, though.

Draft, Chicago. This was just listed as “Porter” at RB, so I’m putting i here. A thicker than expected, dark brown head. Full of coffee and chocolate flavor, and just a hint of cola, I think. Forced carbonation gives it a somewhat grainy mouthfeel, but it’s still a little “thin.” The smell is not very strong, but its roastyness becomes more assertive and I go further down. I’m getting a feel for English hop bitterness here, although that could also be astringency.

Draft at Rock Bottom Chicago. Pours a deep brown/black with a tan head. The nose is a bit phenolic at first, then chocolate and charred roast. Light on the roast and softly hopped. On tasting, it is a pretty well rounded beer, tending again towards chocolate. Not overly sweet. Charcoal notes pervade, minimal hop flavor. Solid overall.

On tap at the brewpub on 6/20/07: Pours an opaque black with a frothy, wispy-lacing dark tan head. Aroma of roasted malts and dark chocolate. Body starts lightly sweet and earthy dark caramely with some biting carbonation (perhaps served too cold) and a bitter drier hoppy finish with a touch of lingering dark chocolate.

Very dark brown, same as the Terminal Oatmeal Stout, actually. Very opaque. Smooth, not thin. Feels hand-pulled almost. Roasted quality and good subdued flavors. Well done. (on tap at brewpub, Labor Day weekend).

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2007 NOTA BENE: These combined ratings are for two different beers.

Brown only around the edges, this black looking ale is topped with a creamy tan head that engages in thick lacing. The aroma (once the beer warmed) is mainly chocolate with some roasted malt and a splash of coffee. Some chewy dark caramel and a light touch of PNW bitterness are added to the flavor. Fairly dry finish. Pretty decent, quite stout-like.

More like a thin, watery stout than a porter. Roasted barley and milk chocolate in the nose and mouth with smattering of hop bitterness in the finish, this is one of the less impressive brews that I’ve had at the Chicago Rock Bottom, most often serving excellent drinks. But this one, some sweetness in the malt, tongue coating in the finish... I’ll past in the future.

On tap at the brewpub, once again thanks Drewbeerme for sharing your beer. Black with medium brown head. Dark chocolate aroma, roasted malt, little soy, dry. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, grain, dry sweet, burnt qualities, some fruit and alc as well. Thin to medium body. Interesting but very one dimentional.

black, wispy tan head, streaks of lace, roasted and coffee aroma with some dry dark chocolate, creamy body, rich dry dark chocolate flavor, light bitterness keeps it very balanced, coffee nots more appropriate for a stout

On tap at the Chicago location. Almost black, with a thin beige head. Quite burnt, roasty feel with some bitter chocolate/mocha. Mouthfeel is distinctly dry and noticeably tart.

Had a pint of this in downtown Chicago. Dark pour with a smallish off-white head. Simple aroma of some roasted malt beans. Flavor was mainly chocolate and some coffee, some lingering bitterness as well. Decent brew, and like Duane said, similar to one that he made a while back.
