[On-tap at RB Des Moines] Pours black with a nice brown head that doesn’t last a long time. Well, I can tell pretty quickly that this is a really solid beer. Moderate bitterness, big chocolate presence, restrained, ashy malt, anise, a little alcohol. Flavors just melt together. Good mouthfeel, long finish. This was really great, and extremely enjoyable. Rock Bottom Des Moines has its fair share of misses, but when they connect, they are turning out some of the best beers brewed in Iowa.

Tap at brewpub. Perfectly black body with a thin dark orange head. A roasted grainy nose has some milk chocolate notes. Hints of bread crust. The taste is sweet cola and milk chocolate. There is also some prune in the light finish. Very smooth with just a hint of the warming abv. Nicely done.
