Commercial Description:
Rich and red, you'll love it! We do! Beautiful ruby red color with a rich malty body and an assertive tangy nose. We use only imported malts to create this unique red ale. Editor's Note: This is a Rock Bottom standard brew and is found in several locations, especially in the Midwest.

Nice aroma, somewhat plain taste. A little bit malty, some hints of nut flavoring.

Sampled at the Chicago location. Clear red with a small, off-white and mostly diminishing head. Good lacing. Light molasses aroma, with some light pine and grapefruity hops intermixed. Lightly bitter flavor, with a lightly acidic finish. Medium bodied and slightly oily on the palate.

Draft. The Erik the Red Ale I had was a dry-hopped american red ale, not an american dark lager. Either way, it wasn’t very good. The hop was nice, but the malty flavor was bad (reminded me of a bad amber ale).

On tap at Rock Bottom Chicago. Transparant, orangish red coloring with a small, almost non-existant ring of white head. The aromas aren’t unpleasant, but are very mind-numbingly typical: Some sweet maltiness accompanies a light grassy hoppiness. Thin, watery texture, but the light caramely flavors are well balanced with the gentle mown lawn hoppiness. Clean finish.

Tap, Chicago. Beautiful cascade aroma. Nice caramelly malt flavor with some depth. Fairly estery.

By the time I got to this one I really wanted to like one of the Rock Bottoms. This was cloudy dark reddish copper, some lacing, no head. Nose was musty, malt, and floral. Taste was a little better, with good malt backbone and adequate hopping. I would have called it an ale rather than a dark lager.

On tap at RB Chicago. Red colour with an off white head. Nose and initial flavour come up empty, but a nice floral and fruity hoppy finish. Light bodied, dries out in the finish.

Red in colour with very little aroma. Sweet malt flavor with very little hops. Quite bland and uninteresting.
