3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 NobleSquirrel (3286) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 22, 2011
Draft at GABF. Pours a deep near black with an offwhite head. Nose is crisp and light roast and a hint of chocolate as well. A bit roastier than expected. Light herbal hop note as well. On tasting, again quite roasty with a crisp and clean profile. Good level of bitterness. Really quite solid.

Tap at KOP. Pours out a dark brown with a moderate almost white head. Aroma is of some light cocoa, and other sweet malt notes. Taste is some caramel, cocoa, slight smoke and maybe the tiniest little trace of some noble hop. Not bad.

From a growler into a pint glass. Pours a medium dark/brown. Lots of head on this one. Not too much aroma, pretty mild. Mouthfeel is light but there’s a lot of carbonation which thickens things up. I like the mouthfeel. Taste is of dark malt, chocolate, coffee, soy (ech!) with some bubblegum, smoke and wood. Nice crisp and dry finish. I could easily drink this all day. Overall a very good beer. Didn’t bowl me over, but It’s got a lot of flavor for a session beer with sort of low alcohol content. I’d happily drink this sucker again!

Draft. Pours near black with a beige head. Roasty aroma with a light sweetness. The flavor has roasted malts, a touch of smoke, and a light sweetness. Pretty good.

Draught at the BrewPub: Aroma of dark malts, roasting, smoke, pretzels, sesame, and light smoked meat. Poured dark brown/mahogany in color with a small light brown/tan head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Lightly sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of chocolate, malts, slight toffee, pumpernickel, pretzel, and hops. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt and chocolate finish is dry.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Jsawyer (297) - Glenside, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 4, 2009
Opaque black with a light tan head. Aroma was caramel, roast barley, slight chocolate presence, barely smokey. Flavor was approximately the same had a nice maltiness about it and light hops about it. I would compare this to a guinness with a little smoked malt. Good start but it was pretty much a porter.

tap @ kop: pours opaque black with a thin tan head. not much lacing. served ice cold...as is most stuff here. i think it dampens the flavors. light carbonation. aroma is caramel, roasted malt, coffee, bitter chocolate, charcoal. kinda thin, but makes up in bitterness. flavor is bitter...coffee, roasted malts, heavy baker’s chocolate. aftertaste is bitter chocolate, light floral hops, light malt. pretty decent schwarzbier!
