3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Rock Bottom Richmond Short Pump. Pale clear yellow, slight head. Aroma lightly of pale malt and floral hops. Flavor matches, with some fruity esters. Not perhaps totally to style, but deviated in ways I liked. Good lawnmower brew, well executed.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had this one at the Chicago location. I would not say this is perfectly to style but it is definitely a very nice blond ale one way or the other. It is perfectly clear and golden w/ a head that leaves behind great rings of lace w/ each sip. It is a nice mild but flavorful beer. A simple bready maltiness plays off hops that start of mild and grassy at first but seem to take on a more fruity character as you dig into the glass. This is medium bodied beer but vigorous but fine carbonation helps it feel a bit lighter. It finishes clean w/ just some lingering bitterness on the tongue. This is not exactly a heavy hitting beer but if you take some time w/ it, it’s really very enjoyable. I am glad I chose to have a glass rather than blow through a sampler w/ this one. Probably would have scored it much lower had I only had a couple ounces.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
September 10th, 2012 - To celebrate my birthday, a friend took me to the nearby Rock Bottom in La Jolla. This was a restaurant I’ve walked past many times, but owing to very plain, average experiences in their sister restaurants in Colorado I decided my money would be better spent at the nearby deli and beer store. But, my friend offered to cover the cost of the brews, so I agreed. We began with their Kolsch, a small and wan looking beer, with an aroma of light apple, that sweet and crisp tang that reminds me of hair spray, and a lighter texture. A whiff of cashew also makes it to my nose, which seems strange and confusing. The flavor is dominated by a baking soda alkaline, mineral water, and some pilsener notes, maybe from crystal malt. The flavor score is somewhat salvaged by a lovely buttery pear note in the aftertaste, and the mouthfeel - sudsy, soft - also delivers some straw and grass notes into the mid-taste.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at Rock Bottom Cincinnati. Pours a pale yellow, somewhat cloudy, with a small white head. Notes of pale and bready and crackery malts, straw, and very faint florals and lemon citrus. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a dry mouthfeel. Okay Kolsch, but there are better ones to be had across town at MadTree.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
on tap @ Rock Bottom / Cincinnati OH --- Nearly clear light amber, thin rim head, small splotches of lace. Taste is wheat and malt with a touch of lemon citrus in the palate. It moves quickly to the finish with light effervescence to balance. This is a good light brew, but it doesn’t have the qualities necessary to be a kolsch.
