RAYBOY01 (1627), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 7, 2008 Huge PNW aroma...no attempt at subtlety here. Grassy vegetal flavor notes lurking in the background. Caramel, wood, sticky sweetness are all there, but the whole reason d’etre here is the citrusy/piney hop slap. Good, but a little too much of a one-trick pony.
dm9831 (601), Monee, Illinois, USA Mar 8, 2008 pours golden amber, slight off-white head, not much lacing. nose is mostly air, with a hint of grapefruity hops. some evergreen in the taste, but not much else. finishes bitter. moutfeel is thick. it gave me a pretty good belch, but i didn’t find it all that appealing. holdenn (1160), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 4, 2008 On tap at the brewpub. They called this Atomic Hop Bomb. Orangish amber body with an off white head. Served in a snifter. Bourbon right off the nose. Caramels spicy hops. Caramels and bourbon constitute most of the flavor with alcohol, spice, earthy notes, wood, and hops coming in. Lightly bitter, but the heat and spice is what stays with me. The alcohol becomes a little bit syruppy and too much. But pretty decent. Dough77 (724), Aurora, Illinois, USA Nov 30, 2007 I must have been in a bad mood at the FOBAB 07, because my recollection was everything just about sucked. Especially anything hopped up then aged. Apparently I enjoyed this one..... Dark golden almost brownish pour. Aroma of hops and caramel. Flavor similar but more complex then your average Wood aged beer, or IPA for tha matter. Overall a tasty sample and one I’d sample again. ElGaucho (1721), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Nov 17, 2007 Draught at FoBab ’07. How can you not try a beer called Hop Bomb? And when it’s barrel aged, really, how can you resist? Not an overly strong hop presence in the appearance. Relatively clear amber with not much head or lace. Tastes more IPAish than barrel-aged. Not bad, but basically just your above average IPA. Served too warm. Nice departure from all the bourbon barrel aged beers I had been sampling during FoBab. A little something funky in the finish.
