3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Taster from the notes I still haven’t entered from MWBF 2011. I can see quite a bit of light shining through a brown porter body. Smell is very lightly malted. Nice, thin stout-y layer of foam. Taste, I will say, is a bit thin and yeasty, but that’s the risk you’re going to run when you’re pouring from small kegs. Bit it’s a clean, dry lager, without much stout character. Light, European hop note, and the coveted clean finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap and poured into a mug at the brewpub: This had a deep mahogany body with a reddish tint, capped by a tall tan head. Nice lacework. It had a roasty, nutty aroma with a hint of chocolate. The flavor faithfully reflected the nose, the chocolate being a tad more pronounced. Dry finish. Very quaffable beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Mug club draft on tap at the brewpub (Orland Park, IL). Poura a nice dark brownish black hue, not opaque, edges throw a solid ruby copper hue, a frothy tannish head sits atop, a bit dirty, dies to a decent film, laces ok. Aromas are cocoa and toffee, roasted malts, a dusting of bakers chocolate, toast, roasty earth and sweeter malts to balance. A light dusting of hops, dry toast and more cocoa. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, offering a highly quaffable smooth darker beer. Throwing cocoa, dry roast, dark chocolate, touches of caramel and toffee, subtle toast, more earth, biscuits. dry earthy roast and a sticky sweet maltiness, nothing overbearing. Quite drinkable with sufficient roast and sweetness battling. Perhaps could use a touch more on the dry roast side, but the beer works very well. I love a good Schwarz that remains true to flavor but doesn’t become overbearing. This is close.. But loses a bit of focus and gets a touch too sweet overall. Still, I enjoyed drinking this.
