beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Oct 20, 2007 OBF. Very complex aroma, there is a lot in there. Earthy tones, wine-like, and hard to describe. The alcohol was very strong, so this could probably sit for a while, but the beer was very nice even with the strong alcohol. The woody wine flavors blended with a earthy fruity, and almost sherry like sweetness, finished off with a funky wild yeast estery finally. Interesting. Angeloregon (2024), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 23, 2007 On tap at Belmont Station--Poured a pale amber with a mini head. Nose of a Belgian sour or vinegar on tannins. Taste of red wine that hit back of tougue hard. Pretty sure it was funked out, but maybe it is just the style. I don’t think the brewer meant for this beer to taste this way. A small sample was all I needed. I had it before and swear it was better. SamuraiArtist (292), portland, Oregon, USA Aug 18, 2007 Draft, 07 version: Pours a light fairly clear red with not much head. Aroma is sour and winey and vinegar and wood. Flavor is sourish and very much red wine vinegar, some bitterness and woody dry spiciness. Some weird flavors in here too. I let it warm up and then i can tell there is serious diacetyl butterscotch all over in this, and way too much red wine vinegar. Its totally bad, Cant finish it. Very infected batch on this version. Murky pale brown color with an ivory head. Balsamic, cherry aromas. Sweet, cherry like flavor with a sharp tartness. Tastes a little hot. Good. 17/20
unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Aug 9, 2006 Had this beer at the 2006 OBF, Portland, OR. Smells like a flemish sour style. maybe even barrel aged. very sour... reddish in color. very tangy beer. I was looking for this perticular beer. If you weren’t, you’d be disappointed. HumuloneRed (750), Portland, Oregon, USA Aug 2, 2006 [Oregon Brewers Festival ‘06] Pours a murky red/brown in color with a thin head and some lacing. The nose is of sour cherries, red wine/vinegar, and malt. The flavor is sweet and then a vinegar sour with hints of bourbon, plums, bread yeast, and malt. Great beer. Oakes (8057), gone rambling, Vietnam Aug 2, 2006 Muddy reddish-brown colour. Voluptuous aroma of cherries, anise, merlot, wood, balsamic vinegar, Special B. Sweet, oily body. Flavour is sweet & sour with a pronounced bourbon front, fading into a jammy, plummy, date-like middle. It gets tarter as it goes, with a good underlying dryness from both wood and alcohol. There’s a bit of balsamic late. There is also a bit of yeastiness that renders the flavours less bright than perhaps my description would lead you to believe, but this is an impressive if completely rough and crazy example of the style. The word in PDX is that the brewer here is quite talented...this beer must be his coming out party to the rest of the world. Well this was a great fruity style Belgium. A very strong brew that was not easy to drink in the heat. This was a great name and a good beer to style. Not easy to brew so they did spend some time brewing this and it was good for that style not a good day time brew. More for the night and trying to get some beer.
