COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The archduke is a moody man. Royalty only wants the finest of everything, and this beer fits the bill. Imported European malts meld with 60 lbs. of raisins in this Belgian Strong Dark. Delicate and wine scented, this pleasantly boozy, light bodied ale is full of ripe fruit aromas and rich maltiness. This is certainly a beer made for the adventuresome and bold.

Draft taster at RBY. Bock brown, with a light layer of foam. A smell of fermented grape and stone fruit with leads to the question: We have prune juice, why not raisin juice? Cause that’s what I’m calling this. A slightly sour fizz, too. Dark malt taste is like a doppelbock crossed with a Leinenkugel’s Creamy Dark. But don’t let my citing of German beers fool you, this is a clean Belgian beer. A good, heady alcohol feel in the mouth, free of burning. Slight coffee finish.

Sampler pour on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a rich deep copper orange hue with gentle haze. A glowing sunset body and edges. Frothy tannish head dies to a decent layer, laces ok. Aromas are darker carmelized malts, toffee, and gentle red fruit. Touches of pear, dried cherries, and faint plum. Gentle yeasty life offers more sticky malts, touches of earthy hops, gentle orange marmalade. Initial is medium bodiedn a touch thicker on the palate with sticky caramel, toffee, and toast. Biscuits, touches of vanilla, gentle spicy elements, kiss of brown sugar. Mellow dark and dried fruits with gentle kiss of red grape, some touches of warm alcohol heat. Middle is sticky and sweet, caramel and toffee, toast, biscuits. Backend and finish is a sticky and leaves a mellow sweet lingering finish, touches of spice, yeast, stone fruit. Mellow abv heat sticks. A bit simple and a bit off my radar as far as personal tastes. Ok.

On tap at RB Yorktown, and served to a 12 oz. ale glass with a clarified, walnut/amber hue, a modest amount of off white head froth, and spots & streaks of lacing. The aroma offered dark fruit as plum & raisin, a vinous/port-like nature, and a brown sugar like sweetness. The flavor mimicked the nose, showed decent malt content, noticeable alcoholic heat, a medium body, syrupy texture, and a soft carbonation that still presented some pleasant fizz. An aperitif type brew that is meant to be sipped.
