drewbeerme (1716), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 23, 2008 on tap at Rock Fest ’08. pours brown with no head. surprisingly hoppy nose. nice! toffee and PNW hops in the flavor. undercarbonated but this was a nice hoppy brown. kseecs16 (472), Westmont, Illinois, USA Feb 18, 2008 Slightly preferred to its barrel aged brother this beer pours a nice nearly opaque brown with a thin light tan head that laces the glass nicely. Nice piney mixture of hops and nutty malt in the nose. Flavors are well blended, nutty, hops, and quite quaffable with a medium body. Good beer! Driftwood6 (207), USA Feb 9, 2008 On tap at brewpub. Thought it had a nice body with a good malt backbone. Nothing too complex in flavor-- a hint of nut, but not like as much as many other nut brown ales. Better than the barrel aged version, IMHO. stoutchap (293), Chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 16, 2007 On tap at Yorktown. Delivered in a small tulip glass. A bit disappointed - I suppose it was 12 oz. - would’ve appreciated 16 - esp. for the price. But that doesn’t really effect all the rest here. Nice Aroma, sharp yet malty. Nice bark brown with a very thin cream colored head - good lacing. I haven’t found the "India" Brown Ale designation used before - as one would expect from that title there was a good amount of hops in the flavor, but also a lot of malt. A little nutty as you would expect for a brown. A nice mouthfeel, but it went a bit flat as the brew warmed. Overall however, very enjoyable. Can anyone tell me if this "India" Brown Ale designation is an actual category or is it just something Rock Bottom’s brewmeisters cooked up? Cornfield (4254), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Apr 24, 2007 Updated: Feb 4, 2008This rerate is because the old one was for the ale of the previous brewer. Current braumeister Tim Marshall has conjured up a brown ale to this hop-head’s liking. And it’s been boosted to a 6.8% ABV, to boot. Sturdy PNW hops greet the nose overlaying a solid malty sweetness, lightly roasted. There’s an increased hop bitterness - pine, grapefruit, zest - to the flavor that wasn’t here before. Good bitter finish. A whole new brew, and a welcomed one at that.
Original Rating - 4/24/2007 - 6/4/7/3/15 - 3.0 ----------------------------------------------------------- Like my friend Drnk_McDermott, I insist on an unfrosted mug! Very dark brown body, nearly black, with a creamy beige head that does some thick lacing. The aroma is heavy with lightly roasted dark malts, a hint of chocolate, and a mild grassy & nutty bitterness. Smooth & creamy to drink, it’s very malty without getting too sweet and finished on a light, hoppy bitter note. Nice.
