A hazed brown ale with a thin off white head. A pungeant floral hops aroma, with meaty malt notes, grapefruits and hibiscus. In mouth, a dryish and sweet malt with light balanced hops, not astringent, pleasant, smooth alcohol. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a hazy dark brown hue, a bit murky, a decent offwhite head that films and laces fairly well. Aromas are a decent citrusy and floral hopping, grapefruit and sticky caramel malts, with some biscuits, vanilla, and citrus rind. Initial is fairly bitter, big grapefruit rind citrus coupled with florals and lemon, some juiciness, with biscuits and caramel giving a sticky coat beneath. Drinks warm, yet well hopped and a good balance. Florals and citrus coat the mouth, malts fall back behind. This is a very well hopped brown, not overly sweet or malty, but a sturdy moderate body to support the hops. Finish is lingering citus and florals and an ever presence yet kept at bay malt backbone.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2008 This rerate is because the old one was for the ale of the previous brewer. Current braumeister Tim Marshall has conjured up a brown ale to this hop-headís liking. And itís been boosted to a 6.8% ABV, to boot. Sturdy PNW hops greet the nose overlaying a solid malty sweetness, lightly roasted. Thereís an increased hop bitterness - pine, grapefruit, zest - to the flavor that wasnít here before. Good bitter finish. A whole new brew, and a welcomed one at that.

-------- />Like my friend Drnk_McDermott, I insist on an unfrosted mug! Very dark brown body, nearly black, with a creamy beige head that does some thick lacing. The aroma is heavy with lightly roasted dark malts, a hint of chocolate, and a mild grassy & nutty bitterness. Smooth & creamy to drink, itís very malty without getting too sweet and finished on a light, hoppy bitter note. Nice.

Mug Club served at the 3/18 tapping party. Poured into the mug a cloudy, dark brown tone with a light tan, foamy to bubbly head, and some solid, clinging lace. The aroma initially presented a slight touch of citrus and resiny nose before exposing roasted notes, and malty hints of caramel, maple syrup, and chocolate. The flavor added to these a medium bitterness that lasted well past the finish. In fact Itís still on my tongue an hour later, as Iím rating!

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2007 Mug Club glass, unfrosted, thank you! Quarter-inch creamy, tiny head but for a crop of bubbles on top. Fresh and spicy hop smell backed by a large malt bill. Solid brown body. My server said the brewmaster is big on Simcoe hops, as is this beer. My impression was itís more toward the English version of IPA hops. No real PNW hop smack here, but grassy, bitter hop with a little citrus and spice, and a suggestion of dry hopping. Malts are clean, more of a chicory roast than coffee or chocolate. This bastard child of many styles is a nice twist and worth a hopheadís time.

Oct. 2007. No re-rate here, but just as a tempting update, I notice "IBA" marked on one of the barrels scattered around the premises.

On tap @ the pub. Pours a dark brown. Actually has a decent hoppy nose for a brown ale. Nice malt and nut flavor as well. A very solid beer, and slightly better than the Bourbon Barrel Aged version. Worth a shot.

Slightly preferred to its barrel aged brother this beer pours a nice nearly opaque brown with a thin light tan head that laces the glass nicely. Nice piney mixture of hops and nutty malt in the nose. Flavors are well blended, nutty, hops, and quite quaffable with a medium body. Good beer!
