Draft taster at RBY. Yeah, Iím probably overselling this beer, but it was just so good. A deep brown beer body under a big frothy head of brown bubbles. Sweet smell of cherry vanilla liqueur overlaying a bourbon and stout nose. Lower alcohol indicates no "burn," and no abundance of sticky malt. Taste starts with the slight sting of roast stout malts. Then sweet, not tart, cherries. Chocolate sets in right afterward, then those vanilla notes, like theyíve lined up for a parade. Light mouthfeel, a little alcohol "vapor," but no warming or burn. Nice cherry flourish at the end.

Sampled at FOBAB 2010. Dark brown tan head. Aromas of tart fruit and sweet chocolates brown sugar. Rich. Tart fruits chocolates brown sugars acidic cherries. Thin medium body. Alcohol. Nice. 8/4/8/4/15

On tap and snifter served at the brewpub, displaying a black/brown hue, a light reddish brown, mousse-like, 1/2 inch head, with wavy curtains of lacing clinging the sides. The aroma was roasted, creamy cocoa, bourbon, sweet cherry, light vanilla, and oatmeal cookie.The bourbon was smooth in the flavor, with the other notes following behind. Add a little woodiness and a silky mouthfeel, and youíve got a fine sipper, or an elegant dessert.

FoBAB 2010: Pours a deep brown nearly black hue with a small lively beige head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of cherries, lacto acid, chocolate, vanilla snaps, coconut, roasted and slight charred malts, some coffee and earthy dirty esters. The taste starts with a balance of fruity tartness and lactic sourness wrapped around a sweet chocolatey center. Under laying tones of wood, ash, roast and liquorice. Really the barrel aging seems to be kept quite even handed and the cherry flavors really help to keep the balance. The mouth feel while oily seem too thinned out. Overall a darn solid beer and one I would like to try again.

Draft at FoBAB 8. Pours black/brown with tan head. Nose is toasted coconut, cocoa and vanilla. Iím not really finding much of the cherries in the nose. On taste, the cherries add some tartness, but it is dominated by coconut. Not a horrible beer at all, just could use some work to get the coconut out of it. Decent.

Draft at the brewpub, pours dark brown with soapy beige head. a strong tart cherry and soy sauce with vanilla and coconut undertones in the aroma. Flavors are slighty sour with hints of cherries, vanilla bean, and milk chocolate. The barrel just killed the body of this beer and it lacks bourbon character. Maybe this would have held up better if it wasnít barrel aged.

Snifter on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a near opaque black, dark and ominous with some ruby edges. A small brownish head dies to a spotty film that clings to the edges, yet laces ok. Aromas are roasty malts tempered by sweet and bitter cocoa, lactose sugars, a touch of tart cherry, light bourbon spirit and wet oaky tannins. Some coffee, the cherries and oaky bourbon, vanilla and wet wood, mix well on the nose. Quite decadent, the tartness and Bourbon mesh well, balanced surprisingly and excites the senses. Initial is medium bodied, a kick of spirit and bourbon, moves into lightly tart cherries, vanilla, some cocoa, moving into more bitter roast and dark chocolate on the back, roasty coffee. Really runs the gambit, offers a changing experience. Warming, but not boozy, the base beer (sweeter and smaller ABVwise) and tart cherries prevent the spirit from taking over. Lactose and vanilla take the edge off, tart cherries bring it home without getting in the medicinal territory. Still, quite roasty and cocoa of dark bitter varieties. Truly, a well crafted beer that works despite the fact that it sounds like there might be too much going on in there. Tasty, cherries grow a bit further in, oak and Bourbon spirit do their job
