A copper barley wine with a thin off white head. A pungeant funky malt with exotic fruits, bizarre light spoilage. In mouth, a strange interpretation, with rye malt, chessy notes, warming alcohol, hard to drink. On tap at Rockfest, April 25 2010.

Draft at Rockfest. Pours a clear and deep amber with fluffy head. Nose is Belgian in nature, on the lighter end. Notes of caramel, hop resin and black cherries. On taste, round and full caramel notes that are counterd with phenolic Belgian yeast notes and cloves. Quite spicy. Clean and dry finish. nice.

Clear red orange with acreamy thin head. Sweet malts red fruits  some citrus but overall alight nose. Red fruit charred malt flavors dominate with a strong piney bitterness. Slightly sweet thin body and bitter finish. Even with the long bitter finish somewhat too sweet and too thin. 7/4/7/3/15  3.6

On draft at rb Yorktown. Pours hazy auburn with off white head. Nose has toffee, spicy yeast, and pear. Flavors are boozy, spicy yeast, toffee, molasses, and peppery dry finish. Pretty interesting take on a barleywine.

Draft goblet at RBY. I’m going against the grain on this, but I have to say just didn’t care as much for this one overall. Nice red mahogany color, no head. Not much aroma coming off of it. Taste is very sweet initially, waiting for the hop balance to kick in and offset the sweetness, but never arrived. Sweetness is heavy with caramel and some cherry and raisin. But thins as it warms, and finishes a bit syrupy. Lacks intensity and richness for a barleywine.

Served in a snifter at the brewpub, this has a somewhat hazy chestnut body with a tight ecru head that vanishes as the brew warms. Initially there’s a big whiff of caramel/toffee sweetness in the nose, but the warmer beer unveils some soft stone fruits and floral and citrus hop scents. Smooth. The flavor is also loaded with a malty sweetness, but a jab from the alcohol, hop bitterness, and some warm brown spiciness tames it all down. A very nice sipper from Tim Marshall which, had the name not been used so frequently, might have been named after me.

Draught. Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin creamy light tan head with some bubbles. Aroma is rich, a sweet mix of chocolatey malt and floral hops. A nice, very full flavor that finishes roast bitter sweet and has a full floral chocolatey body. Very robust mouthfeel and potent lingering flavors. Good offering with a nice balance.

Goblet on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a murky amber with lighter edges, more brown body, a tannish creamy head, decent size, good lacing, stays level. Aromas are heat from the alcohol, throws a prominent fruitiness, orange zest and caramel malts come through, almost some coriander in there. Initial is very hopped, a strong blast of alpha bitterness, citrusy and maybe even some banana, florals, with some soap and bitterness clinging to the backend. The booziness isn’t a real factor on the palate, instead a good hopping, bread, and some fruity sweetness. This must be Old Curmudgeon. The Belgian fruitiness and American hops are quite evident as they mix liberally, strike a pretty good balance. Pretty drinkable. Not bad.
