Driftwood6 (209), USA Feb 9, 2008 On tap at brewpub. Disappointed in the lack of flavor complexity. Very simple tasting-- warm with alcohol and not much else. Just doesn’t stand up to Thomas Hardy, 3F Behemoth, or even Bell’s Old Abe barleywine.
drewbeerme (1840), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 22, 2008 on tap at RB Yorktown, pours cloudy amber with biege head. nose is caramelly and nutty. flavor of caramel, toasted biscuit, good hoppy presence. tasty, balanced, and really drinkable. just not too complex. kseecs16 (576), Westmont, Illinois, USA Feb 18, 2008 Draught 12/23/2007. Slightly hazy little off white head. Sweet hops flavor and aroma. Served at a nice temperature. Dry malt and hops, not as sweet as you’d expect, lingerring hops are dry herbal. Rich creamy palate.
Little lacing.
Dough77 (725), Aurora, Illinois, USA Feb 11, 2008 nice golden pour hints of orange with small white head. Aroma of caramel malts minimal hop. Flavors make for a great caramel malt bomb mixed extremely well with a big alcohol content and topped off with a hint of hop. Very good. Drnk_McDermott (1564), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Dec 29, 2007 Updated: Oct 3, 2008Draft goblet, tapped 12/20/07, tasted 12/27. Hazy copper penny color with a thin layer of bubbles. Interesting malt smell; use of Caramel malts is well noted. Hops are still fresh here, offering lots of German type hop spice stacked against the pine resin and citrus of its NW Aerican cousins. Meaning, it’s a great American barley wine with flavor and bitterness that cuts through my sore throat. Cask taster shows much more powerful malts than the draft version. Hops are actually over matched here. Still yummy. Can’t for the barrel version of this, maybe next fall. Barrel-aged, tasted 10/2/08. Mellower of course. Strong enough not to have picked up much of an impression from the wood. Still plenty of hops, not too sticky. Alchol is very smooth.
