At Avery Strong Ale Fest 2013--hazy golden with a thin foamy head. Pretty complex nose full of crazy Belgian yeast esters. Aromas of spicy peppercorn, hay, cereal tones, pear, and coriander. Flavor is spot on with the nose, being equally complex and tasty. Lots of pear an light orange zest mix with peppery yeastiness, blonde malt, hay, and a quietly sweet yet fruity booziness on the finish I couldn’t put my finger on. Pretty eccentric and delightful. I had an imperial stout before this and I could still get everything from this.

Tap @ Boulder Strong Ale Fest 2013. Pours a orange appearance with a tan head. A bit funky, slightly tart, orange fruity aroma. A bit tart, slightly funky, citrusy, barnyard flavor. Kind of a cool beer.

Bottle. Head is initially small, fizzy, white, fully diminishing. Body is medium to dark yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is a lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly hoppy (flowers), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with notes of banana/gum, cotton candy, clove, alcohol (somewhat fusel - insecticide), paint. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Pretty much a bog-standard Americanized interpretation...overly sweet, with a banana-focused Hefeweizen-like nose and a tiny fizzy head that vanishes in seconds. A long way from what saison is about.
