Bottle generously shared by jarspag for the 7/18 Death Metal Tasting at his place in Orange County. We finally got around to opening this masterpiece of a beer! The beer pours a hazy burgundy color with some lacy beige swirls that float on the surface. Some yeast sediment settles to the bottom. It looks quite mellowed and still; expected with 10+ years of age since Palm stopped brewing this. The aroma is loaded with oak wood and tart, acidic cherry. Notes of potpourri, cinnamon bread, sherry wine, banana rum and lightly bittered toffee follow. The flavor is really something to appreciate here. Ultra-subtle transitions give way to sweet berry and dark grapes with cherry jam and old musty oak wood. The flavor’s finish is very earthy with lingering yeast and raisin bread character. Tart and acetic, but not puckering or weak. Palate is what truly blew me away here, I wish I could have scored it higher than a 5. The body is velvet on the tongue. The aged personality of this beer amazing. Superb drinkability. Wow, I’m awestruck.

1989 bottle. Pours hazy cloudy golden straw with a thick white head and minimal lacing on the glass. Nose is big on tartness, funk, lots of straw and hay. Flavor is amazing. Big on the tart, sour awesomeness, barnyard, dry grain, wheat and lots of yum. Could drink this every day. Love it.

Huge thanks to Puddintane shared w/John_Adam!! Big things to come in small packages. Holy sh*t this beer rocks! I did not like sour ales before drinking this, but I have to admit this one really changed my mind. Pours maroon color with small amounts of white head. Aroma is cherries and wood, but mostly cherries. Taste is a 15/10 on this one. Loads of cherries and other minor flavors like wood and brown sugar. This beer is one of the best I’ve had so far, will be tough to beat it. Very highly recommended especially to those who bash sours and lambic beers. I did, but now I can’t because this beer was amazing.

Huge, huge thanks to Azurelimits for opening this up at his birthday bash a few months back.
Pours a nice garnet color with an off white head. Nose is really, really nice with cherry, sherry, balsamic vinegar, and a bit of oaky earth. Taste is definite sour cherry, acetic acid, balsamic, oak, and some light fruitiness. Mouthfeel is quite creamy with good acidity. Drinks quite well. Never thought I would get to try this, and I’m very thrilled that I did.

1998 bottle shared by Ryan at his tasting.
Nice, lightly sweet and extremely smooth with little of the burning acetic acid present in other Rodenbach beers. Kind of reminiscent of a great bottle of Rose de Gambrinus in terms of the robust fruity flavor with a bit of oak. Fantastic.
