COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

(bottle - corked & caged 750 ml) Hazy red pour with very little foam. Very light fruit aroma with a very nice funky tartness. Cranberry and cherries in the flavor with a fantastic sour funk. Finishes clean and lightly fruity. Outstanding.

Bottled. Pours red with a slight head. Wonderful fruit cocktail aroma. Fruit well integrated, sourness is on the bright side with an appetizing cherry cola like carbonation. Just really tasty.

Bottle at home. Pours clear ruby/garnet with a small, fizzy and bubbly off-white head, short retention, dissipating to the glass edge leaving a mere trace on top of the beer. Aroma is lightly smoky and band aid/medicinal phenols, cranberries, faint acetic notes, tart raspberry, cherry, and strawberry aromas, light earthy cereal malt, imperceptible hops, and some cellar/dust notes underneath. The phenols and berries really dominate the aroma, though swirling opens up the berries a good bit. Flavor is lightly biting and acetic berries (cranberry, raspberry, cherry, strawberry), light peppery phenols, not much of the medicinal/band aid aroma enters the flavor. The earthy cereal malt flavor sits behind the berries and provides support, there is no hop flavor and only the mildest of bitterness which seems more acetic/tart than bitter. Dry and lightly puckering finish with a berry/acetic astringency. Medium body and medium-light carbonation with a faint alcohol warmth.

UPDATED: MAR 23, 2014 Remarkable. This beer is just too close to perfect. Tangy sour aroma and taste is full of cherry and oak. Lots of fruit in the taste too. Incredibly well balanced. I can?t praise this enough. My first perfect 5.

Bottle with some friends NYE. Pours a hazy reddish brown with thin beige head and spots of lace. Nose of raspberry, strawberry, cherry. Mild tartness, great fruit flavor.

S: Tart rasberries, tart cherries, a little of those cranberries are there as well, light oak, wine, some wet hay and light vinegar towards the end. P: Deep reddish purple with a light white/pink head. T: Initially its sour but those berries do give it a nice sweet flavor. All the berries are well presented, a ton of wine on this one, with a hint of oak and a hint of hay. M: Highly carbonated with a light mouthfeel. It is very sour in the begining but finishes sweet. Wow, what a great beer, it is easy to drink and brings great flavors to the table.

Wow this is awesome. Everything I want in a Sour Red plus more. It’s all there slightly yeasty, with a funk and a hint sour cherry in the smell and taste. But you also get an added flavor of mostly tart cranberry with some raspberry. This is a must try if try if you like this style.

Blood red body, thin pinkish-white head, spotty lacing. Sour raspberries and cherries--all fruit. Medium bodied, lively carbonation, a little sweeter than I’d like--although not entirely unexpected from Rodenbach.

Bottle from Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. Shared with Edgar and Vanessa. Snifters. Pours a reddish color, clear, with a pinkish-white head. Head lasted a little and some lacing. Aroma is very aromatic with the raspberries and cranberries dominant. A hint of tartness with the cherries and an overall fruity goodness. The taste is just blissful. About as perfect as a sour fruit beer can get. You get all three with the raspberries, cherries and cranberries. It is tart, but not so much it seems acidic or overpowering with yeasts. It is also slightly sweet which brings forth the fruit flavors even more. Tart finish with medium carbonation. Very good.
