The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Bottle; pours ruby with a thin beige head; aroma is very fruity and tart with red berries and a bit of vinegar; taste is initially sweet and then becomes tart with more red fruits as the dominant flavor; finish is crisp and dry; very nicely balanced between the sweet and sour; excellent beer

Great beer, tart fruit beer, with a reddish colour, I much prefer this beer to the Grand Cru.

This poured a Ruby red color with a pinkish head. Aroma was vineous, cherries and cranberries. Flavor was lightly tart, but also sweet, tons of red fruit, again light vinegar, some lemon and leather. Really tasty stuff.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2014 Bottle. Clear ruby with thin off white head. Aroma and taste are tart raspberry and cherry with a touch of oak. Lots of lacto. Thin sticky mouthfeel. Outstanding brew.

Pours cloudy red/brown with a small white head that vanishes without trace. Nose is crazy complex. Sour cherries, raspberry, and cranberries, with raspberry first, cherry second, cranberry third. There is a sharp oak woodsy note at the very first. There are complicated bitter/astringent flavors from fruit peels. Flavor is sweetish/sour. This reminds me of a fruit lambic more than a sour. There is a little numbing sensation on the tongue. Mouthfeel is rounded at the beginning, trending towards a water finish. Clean. A little astringent. Really good.

Bottle. This was a long time want; I’m glad it got distributed to the US. A: Red bordering on brown. Cloudy. Off-white head. Some lacing. N: Raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, vinegar, cherry, grapefruit, lemon rind, wine grape, sugary grape. T: Sweet and sour. Some sweet-tart elements, but the overall flavors are nicely divided. M: Prickly, filling carb. Medium body. Alcohol is well hiddden. O: A superlative beer. Amply fruity, and I would dare say it’s reminiscent of Rodenbach Alexander.

Pours a amber coppery color with a small light pinkish head. Complex aroma with vinegar, wood, cherries, raspberries and almonds. Hints of leather and paint thinner. Taste is moderately acidic. Loads of fruityness from the berries. Sour and tart. Dry finish. Body is close to medium, mouthfeel is thin to oily with lively carbonation.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2014 750ml bottle served in a Duvel tulip glass. A: Pours a cloudy amber color with some notes of pink. Forms a aired, big bubbled and fluffy pinkish head. Medium to low retention and only few spotty lacings left in the glass S: Very fruity, as expected. Strong notes of red fruits: cherries, raspberries and cranberries (as described in its label). Notes of sweet grains. Tart with a slightly metallic end T: Mild sweet upfront. Again, very fruity. A juicy of red fruits: Cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Mild tartness. Smooth and extremely balanced: Not too sweet and not too tart either. Some notes of sweet malts. A little bit metallic sensation in the end. No alcohol notes M: Light and smooth body. Good carbonation. Fruity with some tart notes in the aftertaste O: Perfect drinkability. Very fruity, even for a Flanders Red. Extremely balanced and pleasant. Another masterpiece from Rodenbach [ BA Review @ 7/29/2013 ]

750 ml bottle
A generous person opened this at a tasting. While expensive I would certainly not hesitate to pick up another if I had the room in the cellar. A different take on Grand Cru and other Rodenbach releases, this accessible special release fits any special occasion.

Aroma / Appearance - A bright red base with vibrant head looks blood red with a thick light absorbing presence. Musty cherries, hay, straw, and cranberries give this a texture which is part Rodenbach Grand Cru and part earthy saison. How it works I don’t know but I could savor it for a long time.

Flavor / Palate - Cherries and bright fruits shine from the first sip. A sweet transition is akin to Grand Cru but with more fruitiness and complexity. The cranberry finish brings to mind some of New Glarus’ offerings if they were transported to Europe. Thanks to the person who generously shared this world class release.
