4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Luxury product developed in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Vicki Geunes; the original batch (2011) consisted of only 900 bottles and my rating is about one of those, though I suppose the later batches do not differ that much. This beer consist of a specific unblended Rodenbach Foederbier with sour cherries, raspberries and cranberries dissolved in it, after which the bottles are laid to rest for half a year before being put onto the market. Pale off-pinkish head, medium thick but stable, colour a deep dark copper with warm ochre hue and calm sparkling. Powerful, utterly fruity and estery aroma, in which the Rodenbach complexity is beautifully mingled with the typical aromas of the respective fruits; impressions of vanilla and tannins, old sherry, honey, passion fruit, mango, yoghurt, passion fruit, port wine, wine vinegar... Taste equally complex and fruity, soft sourish with velvety mouthfeel, vinous, sharpish carbo at first but calming down towards the finish, soft sweetness of raspberries, fruit tartness of the sour cherries and spicy sweetness of the cranberries all noticeable and cleverly positioned against each other, caramelly touch, oak, tart, lemony acid hint in the finish, dry, complex and long, thirst-quenching and with low bitterness as is typical for an oud bruin. This must be one of the best examples of this particular style I ever had and certainly the best Rodenbach. Exceptional.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed reddish-brownish color with a rather thick and billowy pink tinted head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading and leaving some nice levels of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is biggest of sweeter red fruit smells, with lots of raspberry, cherry and cranberry. While some of the aroma is sweet, there is also a good level of funk, oak, a bit of grass, and a rather potent sour vinegar smell creating a nice fruity tart smell for the brew.
Taste – While there is a sweetness in the nose, there is not so much in the taste. There is a little bit upfront with some lightly sweetened blackberry, cranberry, raspberry and cherry flavors. While a little sweet is there, the flavor is largely of a quite tart cranberry flavor. A rather funky and lightly yeasty flavor is present as well along with a rather apple cider vinegar taste. As the flavor advances the sweeter flavors fade while some oak and a bit of vanilla join the tongue. The tart flavors get even stronger more toward the end with the tart cranberry fruit flavor really taking control of the fruit flavors. In the end, with all the tart cranberry coming to the tongue and a bit of a woody and grassy taste joining the flavor, a dry, funky, somewhat unbalanced, and quite tart cranberry flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner and lighter side with a carbonation level that is on the higher side. The lighter body and higher carbonation were quite appropriate for the style, helping keep the sour and fruity flavors of the brew from becoming too overwhelming and keeping it overall more drinkable.
Overall – It was OK, but I wasn’t too fond of this one actually (at least in comparison the original Rodenbach). This was just a little too on the sour red fruit side for me. An interesting try, and if you are looking for a rather sour cranberry flavored beer then this is definitely one to go too.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Had this at the 2014 RB Pittsburgh Summer Gathering at Horny Devel’s place. Actually it was after the equinox at the beginning of fall, but DILLIGAF. Big thanks to James & Michelle for hosting such a nice spread of quality beers and for this particular beer a GIANT thanks goes out to estover. THANKS GENE! Has a friendly fruity smell fer sure. Look is clear darker black cherry red with a tad of brown. Good sizzle from the start. Augmented by cranberry I think. This stuff hides the alky SOOOOO WELLLLL. Has some of that perfumy stuff hitting the olfactory and palate at the same time, very appeasing. Good fruit impressions. Much better than any other average fruity beer and this is right there at the top. Soooooo enjoyable and yummy. A very lovely beer drinken experience. This beer ROCKS!

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours bright ruby red, the white head sporting a touch of pink hue. Cranberry juice dominates the aroma, raspberries, strawberries and cream, vinegar. Smells mostly sweet with some acidity. Flavours are lots of cranberries, tart cherries, rhubarb, red wine and a vinegary, astringent finish. Awesome combination of sweet, sour and some balanced acidity. Medium bodied and unassuming 7%. Cool beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 ml bottle via trade. Pours a mostly clear reddish-gold with a small but resilient off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, cranberry, cherry, raspberry, oak, almond, cream, and faint balsamic vinegar. The flavor follows the same lines, with a lower level of the balsamic kind of acidity I expected from Rodenbach. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a sweet, jammy, funky, slightly acidic mouthfeel. Really nice and balanced, and maybe tilts a little toward the sweeter than the sour. Very nice beer.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
750 mL bottle from SoHo Organic Market, Elizabeth City, NC (best before April 29, 2017 according to the bottom of the bottle). Pours deep red with a quick light pink head. Aroma of red berries with notes of apple and oak. The taste is at first shockingly sour but finishes very smooth. For me, the cranberry is the dominant fruit flavor providing plenty of tartness and keeping the beer more sour than fruity. A bit expensive but a great beer.

4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
bottle. hazy, glowing golden red hued beer with a small, loud, light pink head. lots of berry fruits from aroma including strawberries, cherries, raspberry, etc., and some oak with mild sourness and hints of butter/caramel/vanilla. oak and sweet berry flavors dominate. moderate sour intensity. the berry sweetness really helps cut the acidity. moderate/high carbonation that is very fine bubbled and it creates more a creaminess on the palate than an annoying prickly mouthfull. this beer is perfect!....just the right amount of a acidity, sweetness, oak character, carbonation. a fast drinker at 7%...i downed the whole 750 all by my gluttonous self. didn’t even fire up my heartburn!
