The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

24th Jan 2015: Bottle, shared at the Cotteridge Wine meet, thanks The_Osprey. Rodenbach have been using cherries in their beers for years and they certainly used their knowledge to good effect when producing this lovely brew. Reddish hue to the brown body, on top a pink topping. The sour fruits and their aromas ooze out of the bottle to attack your nasal and taste buds, you could smell the beer being passed up the table, or I thought I could! Bitter, sharp, tart and sour: really enjoyed my sample of this unique beer.

Bottled, sampled at The Cotteridge Convention, many thanks to The_Osprey for this one. Reddish brown with pink head. There are certainly sour fruits to this, bitter cherries, redcurrants, spicy banana and yeast. I was worried about this one but it was lovely. Great stuff.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Well fuck me this is just superb. The nose is juicy plum and date with raisin sweetness, oak, vanilla and red currants. Slight tartiness and you can smell the acidity. That acidity comes through in spades in the taste. Absolutely sour cherry forward stuff with a massive oaky feel. The acidity is what makes this world class, cuts through and leaves length. Sensational drop

(750ml bottle from Mikkeller and Friends bottle shop) Pours clear medium red with a orange-brown tinge and a small whitish active head that dissipates quickly while the bubbles keep coming. Aroma fresh and fruity with cran-raspberry juice character. A sweet and tart quality with a bit of cherry in behind (builds as it airs), soft lactic acid. Some leathery wood. Maybe a floral hint underneath. Cherry comes out much more on the tongue where it is sweet at first and acidic in behind. Raspberry also there in the middle especially. Barrels lends a mix of oak, leather and dried herbal undertones. Finish dry with cranberry tartness and a lingering sweet fruit note. Body is medium but syrupy with very light but sharp carbonation. So freaking fruity, lightly tart and juicy! Love it. Wood plays its part and it’s not too sweet but definitely isn’t the most sour of the style either. Very drinkable.

Against my better judgment I decided to buy a bottle ($25.99!). Man, was I glad I did. This stuff was fantastic, with lots sour, tart flavors at first, then notes of raspberry to sweeten it at the finish. Subtle oak note throughout. Really Good!

A pink sour! Aromas and taste of fruit, oak, and wonderful tartness without too much acidity. Overall, one of the best sours I've had.

Bottle, previous batch. Pours cloudy hazel, small off white head, some lacing. Aroma is heavy raspberry, oak, stems, barnyard. Flavor is initially light sweet, light plus tart, a touch of funk. Super fruity, raspberries and cherries, really nice. Really really good.

Normal head volume, weak retention and minimal lacing - which is normal for the style. Pours a beautiful clear medium copper and garnet. Complex nose of tart and sour with notes of vinegar, hints of raspberry and cherry over a subtle fruit like sweetness. As it warms, oak notes are present. Light medium body with a smooth texture that approaches creamy and has an oily characteristic as well. Above normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a nice burst in the finish. In short, World Class. The flavor profile is World Class and serves as the standard against which others should be judged. It is intense, quite complex and a brewer’s masterpiece of balance. It begins with a burst of tart fruit, raspberries and cherries, over a slightly sweet background. In the middle, tartness gives a slight pucker with only the slightest hint of sour vinegar. The raspberry and cherry fruit flavors slowly subside and cranberry comes to the forefront over a caramel like sweetness. As the finish approaches, dryness comes to the forefront coupled still with a nice tart pucker and flavor. In the finish, oak notes come to the forefront coupled with a slow fade of tartness and slight sourness. A dry pucker lingers.
