The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced. Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Pours a cloudy dark ruby red color with copper/mahogany edges and a one finger pinkish, off-white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Beautiful color in this beer. Sweet vinous aroma with luscious fruit, acetic acid and a strong barrel presence. Decent amount of oak but not overpowering with delicate char. No toothpick character which is surprising given it aged in oak for two years. Strong acetic acid but more of a vinaigrette sweetness, not harsh or solvent-like. Lots of luscious fruit juice. The cranberry and sour cherries really stand out countering the acid and barrel with a really pleasant juicy fruit presence. Smells incredible. Tart and puckering with the perfect balance of sour acidity, earthy oak and vinous fruit sweetness. Subtle funk and acetic acid but again, it not solvent-like, providing mostly vinegary sweetness. Some dark malt flavors in there along with prominent vinous dark fruit. Tart cranberry and sour cherry really stand out along with other dark berries. Well balanced and surprisingly drinkable considering the complexity and sour acidity. Subtle mineral flavor and somewhat kriek like with dry fruit skins, jammy seeds and sweet fruit juice.

Reddish brown colored, moderate head, good lace/retention. Aroma is fruity with notes of strong cranberry and raspberry, but also sour cherry. The usual notes you’d expect like vinegar and oak barrel are present as well, this is Rodenbach we are talking about. Medium bodied, moderate to high acidity with a fruity sweetness to match it; it certainly has Caractere. Alexstrasza is the ’red’ dragon brings life and hope, I must be drinking it because wow (no pun intended). This blows the Grand Cru out of the water.

Draft ar Eulogy. Hazy reddish brown pour with off-whiye foam. Tons of dark red fruit. Aged dried raspberries, plums and cherries. Dates and figs. Blood oranges. Enough tartness to exactly balance out sweeter fruit notes. Reduces to a complex pleasant juicy sour. Definitely "browner" than the normal Rodenbach. In balance more interesting but on par with the more red fruity Grand Cru.

Tap @Olutexpo 2015, Limited 7%. Cloudy chestnut-copper color. Small size, tan head, struggles to stay. Sweet, minty, cake, cherry, woody in aroma. Weird, but intriguing aroma. Sweet, cherries, sour, cake and bit of mint in taste. Sweet cherry and mint in aftertaste. Bit vinegary mouthfeel, but mint cake is nice.

Appearance: Pours a ruddy tone, a little hazed, a little murky with a thin, off-white, pink-tinged head.

Smell: A tangy-scented, sweet-n-sour aroma with an earthy, slightly woody undercurrent. You get your raspberries and cherries, thankfully without that occasional medicinal vibe you encounter.

Taste: A nice, inviting, juicy berry melange stirred up with a goodly splash of lemonade with a thin vein of twangy balsamic vinegar and very subtle oak accents. Tart, semi-dry, cranberry cocktail finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Easily approachable, refreshing fare.

Bottle. Pours a reddish brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of cherries, cherry syrup, sour candies, raspberry. Flavor of tart fruits, mostly cherry but also a little raspberry, wheat malt, hay, sour malt. Sour, but not super tart, and the fruits come through nicely. Delectable. Very drinkable. Too bad it’s so expensive ($30 here!) 8/4/8/4/16 [4.0/5]

Bottle, aged for about 18 months, then shared during our epic gaming weekend. Deep red, hazy, massive cherry and fieldberry aroma, woody undertones. The palate is much more vinous and slightly sour, spicy cherries, light lactic acidity. The aroma implies a sweet, juicy beer but the flavour is much different-- complex, malty, lightly sour, and very vinous. Elegant and interesting and very drinkable.

750ml bottle from Systembolaget. Almost clear ruby red, with a slight tanned medium size, compact head. Tart aroma with berry and fruity notes, oak, cherry and toothpaste. Medium carbonated, smooth and dry mouthfeel. Taste has several dimensions, oak, cranberry, raspberry and cherry, you actually taste the different berries they do not melt together. Sweet vanilla mixes with the tartness of the berries, sugar, strawberry marmalade, yeast and caramel.
