Had this beer at Het Waterhuis in Gent - 10/2008 I’ll just start this review by stating that the Foederbier was amazing... If you’ve had Rodenbach Grand Cru, you know exactly what this beer looks like. It is the familiar cherry wood color (perhaps a shade darker) with a thin tan head that dissipates to a wisp. Lots of oak, sour dark fruit and strong acetic acid in the nose. Imagine the difference in degree of acetic sourness between Rodenbach and Rodenbach Grand Cru. Apply that same increase in intensity from the Grand Cru to this beer and you have an idea of what you get in the Foederbier. Sour and woody but after the initial shock to the tastebuds, refreshing and wickedly drinkable. Puckeringly sour but ultimately delicious. Long sour and tart fruit aftertaste. Lightly spicy, woody and a hint of vanilla. Maybe the best beer I had during my whole trip to Belgium.

On tap at De Zalm on 9/4/09: Pours a cloudy amber copper with an airy froth of off-white head that leaves spotty lacing behind as it subsides. Aroma of light toasty caramel sweetness with lots of fresh oaky cherry tartness. Starts with an oily texture with faint carbonation revealing a nice tartness and light underlying caramel sweetness with a big puckeringly sour finish that I really felt in my throat. Has good oaky complexity and light fruity notes throughout. This is definitely the sourest beer I’ve ever tried. I wish I had brought some pH paper with me.

On tap at DHVL. Copper colour, thin beige. Cereal sour aroma. Pretty drinkable in the mouth, some slight strawberry fruit, some sourness. It’s ok, but nothing special. I do like the finish which made me keep going back to it, but the body/middle was definitely lacking something. Even still it’s a decent beer.

Draft, at de Zalm, Roselare, Belgium. Pours orange-brown, topped with a medium-sized off-white head. Beautiful, quite acetic aroma, with notes of sour cherry, oak, some earthy character, and caramel. Flavor is fairly tart, again with acetic acid, sour cherry, and plenty of oak. Minimum carbonation; this is very very drinkable. This is a beautiful beer, I’m glad that I finally got to try it.

Draught @ De Zalm, Roeselare, Belgium.
[ As my Ratebeer rating #9000 ]. Light light unclear medium red orange color with a average to large, frothy to creamy, excellent lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, berry, woody sour, caramel notes. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and acetic with a long long duration, and a sour vinegar and dry finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. This is a very very nice beer why can i only get it at this places ? But it is lovely so I will be back next time in Belgium ;o)) [20090308]

From tap at de Zalm, Roeselare. Pours almost clear and deep golden amber to light brown with a small and dense off white head. Dry malty and slight acetone aroma. Wineous ad slight wooden. Dry and acidic with a distinct sourness and subdued barnyard note. Extremely red wine brett like base flavour with a nice dryness following. Subdued acetone like finish. Lovely, especially in the early Spring sun.

Handpumped at De Zalm, Roeselare. Sweet prune aroma, Rum-Trauben-Nuss Ritter Sport. Quite vinous. Hazy dark amber colour. Nice stable frothy tan head. Quite acidic flavour, the finish burns my throat a bit. More prune and raisin notes, and more dark rum. The mouthfeel is a bit thin. Low carbonation.
