4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark brownish, amber with minimal head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is quite champagne-like. You can smell the sour, which is quite full. Cherries, madeira, berry fruits, vinegar...Loveable sourness. Appealing to all senses, Taste is quite champagne-like as well. Medium sour, definetely berries, apples, cherry, citrus, well fruity in general. Oaky notes that strengthen the flavours with a beautfiul crispy vinous kick... Light bitter touch in its beautiful dry flavourful long lasting finish. It has something complex, yet it feels and tastes so simple, drinkable and balanced. Medium bodied, sticky texture (clearly on the teeth), and quite a lively carbonation. Loveable lambic-style beer. Great brew. Enjoyable for all seasons.

Bottles from Mam and Dad’s holiday, France and Rehills, Newcastle. A hazy deep red-brown coloured beer with a strong sour cherry and sugary sweet red fruit flavour, followed by sherry, currants and more tart cherry on the smooth finish.

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2014 Clear ruby colour with a thick tan head. Aroma of red wine vinegar, sour cherries, redcurrant and raspberries. At first, taste is slightly sweet but that is quickly replaced by heavy sourness. Thin body, soft carbonation and a dry, tart finish. The fruity aroma and the acidity make it just adorable. Michael Jackson called it "the most refreshing beer in the world". Well, he must have known!

Bottle (BB 29.10.15). Pours a clear red color with a beige fizzy head. Aroma is malty and fresh sour. Taste is malty and very fruity and tart. Also strong notes of red berries, oak and spices. Medium body and high carbonation. Overall very tart. Not really my type but pretty good anyway.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
The ’nobler’ version of the classic Rodenbach, with more old (wood aged) beer than young beer, lightly sweetened and pasteurized so not as ’pure’ as Rodenbach Vintage, but still one of those important landmarks on the Belgian beer map. Light yellowish beige, milky, thin but stable head, deep, warm burgundy colour, clear. Delicate and complex, matured aroma of passion fruit, sour cherries, gooseberries, madera, sherry, wine vinegar, vanilla, oak, iron but not in a disturbing way, honey. Estery fruitiness in the onset, caramel, drenched in a mouth-filling, cleansing and refreshing tartness, sherry-like, woody with tannins, long dry and complex finish with low hop bitterness as expected from the style. A side by side tasting of a pre-1998 sample (before Palm took over) and a contemporary sample revealed the same parallels as shown by the classic Rodenbach: in the post-Palm era, this beer has become a tad paler and less ruby reddish, less rounded and a bit less delicate, with a somewhat sharper sourness and a bit less soft and velvety mouthfeel. Still a great beer though, doubtlessly.
