A blend of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 of beer aged 2 years in large oak vats. The more important proportion of oak matured beer contributes to its fruity taste, complexity and intensity. The finish is worthy of a great wine.

Rated 3/20/13. 750ml bottle into a Duvel tulip. A: Pours a murky brown color. The head is a one finger light mocha shade that features a beautiful creaminess to it. Lacing is great for the style. S: A lot going on in this one, and a lot going on that I love, as well. Huge sourness (mainly lactic) is augmented brilliantly by tart cherries. Underneath that are layers of oak and cream. It’s complex enough, and immensely enjoyable. T: The first note on the palate is a wave of pleasant, well-restrained sourness. Then, fantastic cherry notes overtake the midtaste before a finish that strikes a balance between cream-like sweetness and oaky dryness. It’s not the sourness or the fruitiness that lures me into this one; it’s the sophisticated cohesion between all the different elements which does so. M: Crisp and light, not to mention refreshing. Mellow dryness and carbonation help it go down with incredible ease. O: Wow, this kicks ass. On the right kind of day (let’s say perfectly sunny, 80F, sitting on a patio) I’d have no trouble crushing multiple 750ml bottles of this left and right. Beautiful stuff, this one.

0.33 bottle, served in snifter. Disappointing, minimal and quickly disappearing head. Dark brown color, hazy, unclear. Lots of sourness in aroma, mostly apple, some plum nad cherries. I also found some nuts (resembles crystal malt, not sure if it was used here). When it comes to taste, not so sour as many lambics, but thats not a disadvantage for me. However, I can still fell nut flavour, apart from fruits and some earthy flavours. Aftertaste is mildly sour along with medium finish. Average carbonation. Its a great beer and worth recommending example of a style. Usually hard to get, but dont hesitate if you find one anywhere.

Aroma: Fruity, sour, apple, cherries, orange Appearance: Clear dark amber body. Sparse light-brown head. Flavour: Sour, grain, fruity, woody, cherries, orange. Palate: Dry finish, Medium-Light body. active, but soft carbonation. prickly acidity. crisp, Overall: Oooh! Very nice! A great example of the style. Time to taste a classic... Dark red brown colour, small, quickly disappearing head. Slightly sour, wine-like aroma. Damp forrest smell. Predominantly sour taste, winey, with a hint of mildew. Reminds me of Roquefort cheese. Honestly: not my kind of beer.

Pours a red color. Sour aroma, not particularly fond of that. Taste is sweet and sour, some cherry or res berries. Fresh, sparkling, really something different from my regular choice. Not my style though.

From tap @ Delirium. Dark browh with a red glance. yellow brownish head. Nose: sour, wild yeast, cherries. Taste: wood, oak, cherries, some fruitiness. sourish finish, but still some sweetness in the back. Almost perfectly balanced, oh so refreshing. This is just a great beer!!

My wife and I took a beer pilgramige to Belgium. We knew that New Belgium Brewery’s first beer ’Abbey’ was started with the yeast from Rodenbach. So we had to stop in Roeselare,Belgium. After the tour we had a tasting. First comes the regular Roeselare beer which is 2/3 new and 1/3 aged. It was one of the best beers we’ve ever had. My wife loves sour, fruity lambic style beers. Then out comes the Grand Cru. Being 2/3 aged beer, it was one of the most intensely powerful and complex beers I’ve ever had. Especially being served in the Brewery. It was a dark red, plum tasting, sour Belgium style beer. It was the best stop on our tour of all the remaining Trappist breweries like Orval, Chamay, and St Sixtus. As an aside, our tour was in Dutch. We got lucky and one of the ladies in the tour knew English and translated for us. If you are ever close, make it a point to go to Roeselare and tour the brewery. The rows and rows of giant wooden casks is an impressive sight to see.

Really well done sour, smooth and not too tart. Brown/ruby with spare beige/pink head. Aroma of sour cherries, peat, wood barrel. Taste is sort of cider-like, light bodied, tingly palate. Sweet, but not too much.
